A/N: This was written straight after I read ANGEL, so yes, there are spoilers. Set in two times, pre-FANG and pre-TAE .

Enjoy!

"I was meant to have wings."

"Hey, Mom," Ella called. "When do you think we'll see Max and the Flock again?"

This was a mere ten minutes after after the flock had left Ella and her mother's home in Arizona.

Dr. Martinez sighed and stared out the window, thinking of her decision from so long ago.

"Ella, come here, I need to tell you something."

Ella took a seat next to her mother on the couch. "What is it?"

And Dr. Martinez launched into a full story.

"From today, it was about thirteen years ago..."

Valencia Martinez – not yet a Doctor – fingered her rounding stomach. She hadn't technically been pregnant before, but she already had a daughter. A daughter whom she had never seen before in her life, despite her protests. She almost broke down at the thought of her lost daughter. She hadn't bothered naming her, for fear it would make her feel worse.

And yet, she had agreed to have a second child for the cause.

Maybe, if I donate another, they'll let me see them. Both of them, she thought to herself, knowing she was just being deluded.

Then, a knock came upon the door. Valencia knew who it was before she opened it. Jeb Batchelder.

"Hello Jeb," she greeted.

"Valencia," he nodded. "How is the child?"

The child. Not your child.

"Good. But what of my daughter, who, as I remember, is in your care," she questioned.

"I can't discuss that with you," he said, and Valencia nailed him with an icy glare.

"Don't look at me like that! I've already told you, it's top secret, right down to the bold-lettered red stamp!"

"A mother has a right to know about her daughter, Jeb."

"Not in this case."

Then he left.

Months passed. A baby girl by the name Ella Martinez was born.

Mere days after her birth, Jeb was there at the Martinez residence.

"Remember our deal, Valencia?" he asked softly.

Valencia glared at him, gripping a squirming baby Ella.

"Hand her over."

"No."

"Excuse me?"

"I'll never see her again! Nine months of supporting her in my body, and then you'll take her away. My baby Ella!" she looked down at her daughter in adoration.

"Valencia, it's the hormones talking. I knew it was a bad a idea to let you get attached. Snap out of it and give me the baby. We have plans for her."

"Like giving her wings? Yeah, I found out. Not so 'Top-Secret' after all."

"She was born for this."

"I can't lose her Jeb. She's all I have now," she looked at him with pleading eyes. Somehow, little Ella's eyes were locked on to Jeb's in the same expression, as if she knew what was going on.

"Fine," Jeb hissed. "But don't ever expect to see Max again."

With that, the door slammed and Jeb was gone.

"He name is Max," Valencia whispered softly.

"Ella, you were meant to have wings," Dr. Martinez told her.

"I could've been with the Flock! And you took that away from me?"

"Ella, haven't you ever listened to Max? What they all dealt with at the School? It was absolute torture, Ella, and I wasn't about to put you through it too."

Ella just stared silently at the floor.

I was meant to have wings.

A/N: And there you have it. Kinda short, but I like it. Is anyone else wondering what happened to Ella during ANGEL? It would certainly change things if she got wings.

But anyway, here's an explanation as to why Ella thinks she's supposed to have wings.

Either that or she's just extremely deluded.

And another thing, to any other Doctor Who fans out there, do you understand why I laugh when I picture Max saying "My name, is Max -insert tooth sparkle here-" (Think, Voyage of the Damned)

No? I'm just weird? Okay.

Anyway, review?
