The First Murder in May

First of all, kudos to my friends on CastleTV chat for some ideas :)
I don't own Castle.
If you aren't familiar with the events of The Kentucky Derby you might not understand this fic.
Rated T for my swearing xD

Kate rolled over as her alarm clock sounded it's annoying tone. She groaned and rose from her bed. It was sunny and hot outside, but the sky had a few dark clouds in it. Her phone rang twice before she answered.
"Beckett."
"Uh, yeah. You might want to come here." Ryan said.
"Is Castle alright?" she asked.
Ryan giggled as Castle took the phone from him.
"Detectiveeee! Come to Belmont Park!"
"No, I'm not going to the track with you Castle."
"There's a body."
"I'll make an exception for that." she said before hanging up.
Kate sighed, it was already too late to take a shower. She quickly got dressed and headed out the door. As soon as she was outside, the wind tossed her hair, and the sun was exceptionally warm. She smiled softly and opened her car door. She sat down and started the motor, the radio was on full blast. She quickly shut the radio off before driving off, towards Belmont.

Kate opened her car door at the crime scene, she was greeted by a barn dog, and Castle with two cups of coffee, he handed her one.
"Thanks." she said with a small smile.
She gazed at the body, it was mauled with large wounds on the face, and all over.
"What do we have here, Lanie?" Kate said, still looking over the body.
"He was killed with a horseshoe." Lanie said.
"A horseshoe?"
"You got it."
"Alright, any ID?"
"Nope, all I know is he's a white male, middle age."
"Alright, I'll go ask a few questions to some of the stablehands." Kate said.
"C'mon Castle." she said while ducking under the yellow tape.
She glanced at the rows of horses in the dimly lit barm.
"Were you one of those girls who just loved horses?" Castle questioned.
"Yes, actually, I was." Kate said with a smile as she reached out to stroke a horse.
"Mm, that's interesting." Castle mused softly.
"Yeah." she said as she spotted a young male at the other entrance.
"NYPD!" Kate said, flashing her badge.
"Detective, what can I do for you?" the male questioned.
"Someone was murdered this morning." she said, putting her badge away.
"That's terrible. May I ask who?" he asked, leaning on a pitchfork casually.
"We don't know." she replied, looking distastefully at his casual behavior. The stablehand quickly straightened his posture as Kate's eyes looked over him.
"Well, I hope you find the guy who did it." he said before walking away.
"That dude was about as much help as one of these horses." Castle retorted.
"I'm pretty sure they'd help more." she replied with a small chuckle.

Sorry it's short, but my chapters will get longer. I do not own Castle.
