Sunlight was getting through the swaying leaves, and broke into many warm rays on Remus' face. He was bathing in it, eyes closed, smiling to his thoughts, enjoying the moment of peace and solitude… until he realized he was being watched.
Remus opened one eye cautiously, and looked about, squinting. He didn't have to look long though, because the source of disturbance was at arms' reach.
"Aw, did I disturb your daydream?"
"Hello, Lily. Never knew you enjoyed watching people sleep. I should tell James, he's be interested."
The Evans girl laughed and waggled her finger at him.
"You wouldn't, Remus!"
Remus raised and eyebrow.
"Why not? After all, James' my friend, and he's interested in you, ergo he'd be interested about this new fact defining Lily Evans"
Lily pouted. Remus laughed – she was adorable when acting like a 9-year old which didn't occur often, he had to give her credit. He shifted a bit closer and nudged her shoulder.
"Come on. He's not that bad, actually."
Lily gave him a look he classified somewhere between incredulous and withering. Remus sighed.
"Oh all right. He is bad, most of the time. The classic bighead jerk who thinks he's irresistible… he's still my best friend, mind"
Lily shifted a bit so they were face to face. Remus felt his face grow hot, and it was not the sun. Evans tucked a stray lock into place, and looked up, straight into his eyes.
"Look, Remus. You know I really dislike Potter. But has it ever occurred to you that there is someone else I like ?"
He knew it was coming sooner or later, but sincerely hoped for later.
"Lily, you don't understand…"
Remus wasn't given the chance to explain what exactly Evans didn't understand. Lily's lips were suddenly on his, and there was nothing he could do about it but answer the kiss, and feel like he was betraying his friend. Before things got out of his control though, Remus pulled out. And saw disappointment in perfect green eyes. Breathlessly, he started to talk again.
"Lily, we can't do that! I'd feel guilty forever, besides, it's just … not fair."
Lily's eyes were bright with tears, but she smiled anyway.
"Allright then, if you think so. Bye, Remus. See you in class then."
