The pink dog stood wearily at the graves, realizing how old he was. Before he had always been so energized and ready for action- seeming so young, agile, and full of life. Now, he realized that he was old, fragile, and more and more, fading from the world.
What point was there left to his existence without either of them? They had died only three days from one another- it seemed the old man really did live his wife, for he just gave up once she was gone. The little dog remembered watching as his owners both gave up and fell asleep- forever. Never to reawaken, but to be at an eternal peace with themselves.
He had protected them day after day, 24/7, fighting against monsters and evil villains. All for their sake, because without the two of them- yes, both of them- he would have met a fate so much worse long ago.
As the pink little dog stood there, he couldn't help but feel at peace himself, lying at the foot of both his masters' graves.
His life had been good with them, despite so many injuries he had gotten. In fact, he thought with a sudden spark of curiosity, he probably should have died long ago from those wounds. Oh... Oh well. Doesn't matter now, he thought as he put his head back down.
He had made wonderful friends too, some of who were willing to take him in at the news of his masters' deaths. But he wouldn't leave them, not for the world.
He had done so much, and while it seemed to be unappreciated, he knew they thanked him in their own ways. The kind old woman would bake him sweets and cook his favorite dinners for a week straight. The old man would still scare him and be rough with him, it'd be creepy if he wasn't, but it was at a lesser extent. And that's all the little dog wanted.
Their affections, their love, and their peace.
And that's what they got: peace.
Maybe it was time he got his well-deserved peace as well. As he let his weary eyes close, he couldn't help but think about the many things he had gone through.
'The things I did for love.' He thought with a grin.
And those things were completely worth it.
