When he fought against the Earl the third time, he was afraid. He had lost almost all his friends, and he was about to get destroyed along with the Ark, but that didn't stop him. He had crushed Lavi's hammer and let him fall. He had abandoned Kanda to fight Skin, and that part of the Ark had been destroyed. Krory was left behind to fight Jasdebi, and probably that part of the Ark was destroyed too. He knew that he probably wouldn't be able to get out alive, but he fought anyway.

He had cried when Lala was broken. He knew it was too good to be true. Lala wouldn't be the one to break Guzoru. It was just the fate of God, wasn't it?

When he was fighting the Earl, and when he thought that he would defeat him finally, he thought about the day when he would finally let this all go.

He was afraid when he was trying to save Suman Dark. Even though he didn't know him, he still wanted to save him. His face when Tyki destroyed Suman was of complete fear. He didn't want to feel like that again.

Mana gave him a home, a place to live, someone to care for him. He didn't care that Allen was strange, but when Mana passed away Allen started to get lonesome. That's when he turned Mana into an Akuma.

There were times when his eye hurt him, or his Innocence did. He'd wish to die then, but he'd regret it when the words would pop into his mind. He was an Exorcist; he had to live to destroy the Earl, as God's Apostles and The Destroyer of Time.

Allen practically hated Kanda. He was always cruel, but still he treasured everyone, including him. They were his precious keepsakes, and he would protect them until the end

So when the bond is broken between humans and the Earl, he will let his smile fade. He will let his happiness fade into the dark. That's the cost of being happy during the war. When the thread between the Earl and humans is broken, he will fall.
That is just a mere thing as a sacrifice. He himself calls it "sweet sacrifice".
