A Christmas Gift
Lily sat in her bedroom, waiting for James to come home. He had been working late every day since a week ago.
It was Christmas Eve and Lily had just found out she was pregnant. She hadn't had a chance all week to tell James her suspicions.
Just as she put dinner in the oven, she heard a crack that signified her husband's return. He came up behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist.
"Hey, honey. What's for dinner?" he asked, as she straightened.
She looked around and smiled. She dragged him into the bedroom.
She had something to tell him, and she didn't want to have to do it in front of his friends.
He looked at her curiously, as she handed him something to open. He glanced at it, seeing her prettyful, as she called it, handwriting.
She watched him as he unwrapped the box. When he got to the familiar black box she saw a glint of confusion in his eyes.
When she took the box from him, he didn't see the evil smile on her face.
She opened it and handed it back. He looked at the pair of small boots sitting in the cotton. He didn't catch the fact that her hands had gone to her belly.

When Sirius and Remus left later that evening, he was still musing over the boots.
As he climbed into bed with Lily, he asked her about it.
She giggled. "James, you're still wondering? When did you get so thick?"
"You're calling me thick? I think you're confusing me with Sirius," James retorted, starting to tickle her.
"James, stop it! Do you want me to keep quiet?" she asked breathlessly.
He stopped so suddenly she had to catch her breath.
"Well, are you going to tell or not?" he asked.
"I'm pregnant," she answered readily.
The shock in his eyes caused her to pause. Was he worrying about bringing a baby into the war?
When she looked up, she saw a smile as bright as the light turned on overhead.
He stood and grabbed her hand. He lifted her into his arms and spun her around.
"I'm going to be a father," he sing-sang. And she laughed.
"We should make Sirius Godfather," she answered.
