A note before the fic: the Japanese is cerimonial chanting. There is no good translation. It's also lifted directly from the Tokyo Babylon manga.
---
Late October, 1985. A ten year old boy looks up at the so called haunted house on the hill. He is timid, but determined. Little as he wants to go there, nothing will make him back down from what he said he would do.
He is beyond scared of what he may find; he is terrified.
As he walks through the door, he sees a malevolent fog, a hatred so thick it has become a physical presence. It strengthens his resolve.
A shape appears before him, of a girl no older than he. She beckons, and the fog closes in upon him.
He waves a hand, and it dissipates.
ON TATAGYATO DOHANBAYA SOWAKA
As he begins to chant, the spirit wavers. She begins to fade, and he pauses. Could it really be this easy?
ON HANDOBO DOHANBAYA SOWAKA
As though she senses him faltering, she returns. She lashes out with a blast of pure hatred. It sends him to his knees.
ON SOWAH-ANBAH SHUDA SARABA TAMARA SOWAH-ANBA SHUDO KAN.
Without bothering to stand, he continues chanting, growing louder and more desperate as she batters at his defenses with all of her strength.
ONBASARAGIN HARAJI-HATSUTAYASOWAKA
He is stronger. Gloved hands fly through spiritual positions, channeling his power toward the ghost before him.
ONHAZORO DOHANBAYA SOWAKA
He lashes out with both hands and power, throwing a fuda directly at her form.
ONBARODAYA
It connects.
SOWAKA!
And she is gone.
In the west, Halloween is a holiday of ghosts and demons, of witchcraft and spirituality.
For Sumeragi Subaru, every day is Halloween.
