After he hit the light bulb, the bedroom was completely dark, and it took a moment before his eyes had adjusted to the lack of light so that he could walk to the bed. He lay down and cuddled next to his rose pink girlfriend and wrapped his arm around her to hold her even closer to him.

"Was about time that you join me. It is late."

"Sorry Ames, I had to finish cleaning the bathroom, it was messy. But now I'm here."

He smiled and closed his eyes, trying to fall asleep but after a while, he knew that this was useless at the moment.

"Hey, I really missed you."

"What do you mean, Sonic?"

"I don't know…it feels like I haven't had you around for some time now."

"I thought you knew that I would never be gone completely."

"Maybe. I'm just glad you're here now. I missed you and your smooth fur, it's like holding onto the softest pillow in the world."

She giggled at his comment but was quickly interrupted as her body shivered as Sonic started to kiss her neck.

"Sonic! Stop that!"

"I can't help it, you're too beautiful."

He slowly moved down and kissed her back, which was only possible because of her lack of protruding quills there. He knew that this sent chills over her, although she denied how much she liked this.

"You're such an idiot!", she giggled.

Sonic stopped his actions and looked at her.

"You know, we've been together for a while now…"

"So?"

He took a deep breath and hesitated.

"I wondered if we could take the next step."

"You know we can't do that, Sonic."

"Why?"

"You sure know."

"No, I don't."

"That's because you try to forget about the reason."

"Maybe. But as I said, I think we should move on."

"What's on your mind?"

"You know…moving in together. We could buy a house…start a family someday…stuff like that."

"Oh, Sonic! That's so cute! But we can't."

"Why? How can it be?"

"Don't you realize that you ask yourself this question every day?"

He looked at her as if she was talking in a different language. It took a long moment before he knew what was going on.

"Why you?"

"I don't know, either, Sonic. It just happened."

Tears started to form in his eyes as he looked into hers.

"I'm so sorry! I should have…"

"Don't be sorry. You did everything you could do."

She stared back into his eyes and rubbed his tummy to calm him down, which he did. They remained silent for quite a while before Amy spoke up again.

"I have to go back now."

"But I don't want you to! We could become so many things together, all you have to do is stay with me!"

"Please, Sonic. You have to understand. I also miss what we could have become, but neither one of us can change anything.

Sonic nodded hesitantly.

"Amy…there's one question I keep asking myself, though. Who of us did leave?"

She smiled at him.

"I already told you, and you still know the answer yourself. Once again, you just forgot about it, so let me give you a hint here: It was not you."

Sonic started sobbing again as she vanished in front of his eyes, revealing some pillows which were rowed up in a body-like shape. He pulled his arm away from the construction and curled into a ball, slowly crying himself to sleep.
