The Lark

The Lark

She is called the lark;

she is tiny

and is the first one out

in the mornings.

She is

so sullen and

so ugly and

miserable.

Her hands are

red and chapped

and she is all

black and blue.

The woman shouts

at her and beats her

as she cowers

in her tattered rags.

Her big blue eyes

always have tears in them

as she works.

She is the Lark.
