A/N: This is a one-shot I wrote just after the last episode ever *sobs* of Merlin aired on Christmas Eve. I may have crying whilst writing it...may have been. You have been warned. I was wondering how Gwen would have reacted to the news of Arthur's death and this was the result.

I'm sorry. There was nothing I could do.

She puts the parchment down and feels the world come crashing down around her. Where is he? He can't just leave like this with no answers. She has a right to know. Arthur wasn't just her king, he was her husband.
If she can't say goodbye, then she should at least be able to hear his final moments. It would be the closest she would ever get to him again.
And in that moment, she broke down and all the tears that she had held back, refusing to believe the worst, come flooding, cascading down her cheeks in a raging river. Arthur. She will never see him, never talk to him, kiss him, hold him, never anything ever again. She curls into a ball and howls, her body shaking with heartbroken, uncontrollable sobs as the tears soak into the expensive folds of her dress, a dress she would not even be wearing if it were not for him loving her. They told her Morgana was dead, that her body lay forgotten in the woods. They told her that peace had come at last to Albion.
If this was peace, she preferred war. If this was peace, she wanted none of it.
The tears would not stop, every time she thought she could regain control another wave of memories would hit her. Arthur laughing, Arthur dancing, Arthur fighting, Arthur kissing her and would drown in the sorrow once more.
Why? Merlin was supposed to be magic. Why could he not save him? Why did it have to be him? Why? How was any of this fair? She sobbed and cried and rocked. For how long, she did not know.
A hand rested on her shoulder. She did not look up.
"Gwen, breathe."
But how, when he was not?
