"Please, Daddy, no," the little boy with sandy blonde hair pleaded, his grey-blue eyes filling with tears.

The large man, tanned from the sun, muscles hard form years of factory working, snarled down at his young son. "This," he held a small brown patched puppy above the boy's head. "You want this," he gave the puppy a good shake, holding tightly to it's scruff causing the puppy to yip in pain.

"This mongrel is no good. It's untrainable," he yelled tossing the puppy in a pillow case, twisting the top together. "It doesn't obey. It cries all night long. It soils in the house. It's a damn hassle and no damn good."

"Please, Daddy," the little boy pleaded, his bare feet slapping the wet wooden dock as he trailed after his father. "I'll train her, Daddy, please. She'll be a good dog. She won't cry. I won't cry."

"Grow up," he snarled, yanking his arm out of the boys small hands, the boy tumbled back off his feet. "Here's your first lesson in being a man," he held the pillow case out over the edge of the dock, the puppy inside whimpered and struggled to no avail. "Your first lesson, son," he spat the words out angrily. "Toughen up."

The pillow case dropped, splashing in the water and slowly sinking. The little boy cried out, crawling to the edge of the dock and holding out his hand to the case far beyond his reach. "No, no, please," he cried, tears running down his cheeks. "Please, Daddy, save her."

He was quickly yanked up my the suspenders placed over his bare shoulders, his father gripping his arm tight enough to cause him to cry out.

"If you don't want to end up like you little Spotty at the bottom of the East River," he shook the boy hard, just like has had the dog. "Then dry your damn tears. A Conlon doesn't cry."
