He knew there were other ways, other rituals he could have tried and other demons he could have dealt with. All potentially ending in the same result.
Potentially
This was too important for something that would only potentially work. The price of failure was far too high. He could not, would not, risk it. So really, John had no choice.
Dean couldn't hold on much longer.
John knew this evil intimately, knew what it wanted, what buttons to push.
John knew with the yellow-eyed demon the price would be high, but Dean would be saved, of that John was certain.
