All characters belong to Lucy Maud Montgomery. Do not read this fanfic unless you've read all 8 Anne books. This is about Anne's feelings towards Jem's narriage. Apple Leaf Quilts
Anne was thinking the same thought she had decades ago. "How horrible it is that people have to grow up!" Jem would not be leaving Ingleside forever if he was still her little Jem! Not exactly FOREVER, not like her dear lad...But he would only be visiting every now and then. He could no longer be called "the boy of the House of Dreams who lives at Ingleside", because he wouldn't even live at Ingleside anymore. Anne softly quoted the apostle Saint Paul, whom she had read about earlier that day in Acts:
"For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be of one flesh."
Jem had finally finished his medical schooling, and now he was Dr. James Matthew Blythe. He and faith would be married and would be moving to Tignish. So far away from their precious Glen St. Mary! At least Jem had a summer home in Charlottetown. A soldier had given a place to Jem for saving his life. Anne had Diana (Wright, not Blythe) look at it and Anne's bosom friend said it was NOT a house of dreams. "Oh Anne, it's a perfectly lovely house, but the neighbors I hear are a horror. Jem better use it as a summer home. The Wedlins and The Omers both are gone to THEIR summer house so it would be perfectly wonderful in the summer." Jem was taking his "Aunt" Diana's advice. Susan's relatives were asked to "see how they're doing" every once in a while. Anne resolved to go up and get an apple-leaf quilt for the bride-to-be. Years ago, when Mrs. Rachel Lynde died, she left 30 quilts for Anne. Anne still had all but six still. Two had been given away to other brides: (previously named) Mary Vance and Gertrude Oliver. Another had been given to Rilla's junior Red Cross group. The last three were given to chums who had once snuggled under them at Patty's Place. Phil said hers was the most wonderful thing she had in her room. (It beat her old letters from....Alfonzo and Alex? Anne couldn't remember.) Stella said her rose print one reminded her of Hester Gray's garded (Which, according to Diana Wright, was still beautiful although Anthony Pye's son painted the white roses a sickly yellow one year!) And Priscilla...dear Pris sent money so Anne could send hers to Japan and there was $100 dollars leftover and...Prissy said keep it! Apparently Jane had gave her family a lot of money lately. Anne could still remember how happy those shore kids were went they each had new boots or trousers or dresses! Anne stopped reminiscing to shout. The apple-leaf spread would need two weeks to air out! The wedding was in two weeks and she would be cutting it-as Davy would say-AWFULLY close...Anne would risk it. As Mrs. Rachel Lynde would once said (another quote!), "I don't believe there's anything better for a spare room bed than a nice apple-leaf spread, that's what." Anne was smart to get a few extra quilts out, too. Kenneth Ford and Rilla had only officially announced their engagement a wek ago after keeping it a secret for almost two years (next thing you know they'd say they had really been married the past 8 months)...Anne had seen Nan and Jerry kiss in Rainbow Valley not 2 days before...Shirley was rumored to be dating Roy Gardner's niece by marriage...who knew how many apple-leaf spreads Anne would need? Oh, and she might just up and give Una Meridith one. Anne suspected that the girl had a crush on Jem. She never talked about her sister's wedding and when Anne asked her if she ever planned to get married Una replied, "Not anymore." Anne would have a talk one of these days with her. Anne sighed. "How useful apple-leaf quilts are...thanks be."
