Shelby is coming back.

Four simple words. Four words that Xan had clung to.

Shelby Merrick had been gone two or three weeks today, and the whole time, Xan had been silent and sad. However, her grades had soared, while Scott and Daisy's had plummeted. Peter and Sophie had tried their hardest to get Xan to speak again, even if it was in her clipped sentences, and they tried to get Scott and Daisy to get their grades up. Their efforts were met with hostility. But today, everything would change yet again, as this was the day that Shelby would return to Horizon.

Peter had rushed to get the scholarship fund in place, so that Shelby could return. He had even asked Mrs. Merrick if she wanted Jess to join her sister, but she had promptly pointed out that Horizon was the last resort and she had yet to do anything with her youngest child. Peter knew to stop there, and the conversation had returned to Shelby. He had talked briefly with her doing the first phone call, and was surprised when a second came. However, that time it was from Shelby and not her mother. She had merely called to tell him thank you and to remind him that she wanted Xan to know she was coming back. When Peter had asked why, she had answered, "Because she's my friend and I want her to be alive when I see her." Peter knew she was referring to the last month's suicide attempt Xan had made, and he was sure Daisy's letters always included something on each of Shelby's few friends. He had promised to tell her, which he did that very day. Xan had been overjoyed to say the least when she heard, and the two days prior to Shelby's return, Xan had smiled and laughed and even spoke a word or two in her classes.

"Shelby!" Xan yelled, as she ran across the campus to the station-wagon. Shelby, Jess, and their mother were just getting out of the car, and the two latter were surprised to see Xan's behavior.

"Xan!" Shelby yelled back. She noticed the two others following the now-seventeen year old, and called their names, "Scott! Daisy!" She didn't care how stupid or weird she sounded to those around her – she was home. She was where she belonged and now, no matter what happened, the four friends were together. And everyone knows that nothing can bring you down when you're together.

Really short, I know. Just kinda my AU of Shelby's return. Written on May 14th, I think. I wrote it following the preview of when Shelby left. I was bored and wondered how she'd come back in my little story world. (I had to throw in ONE of my characters!)
