The blood soaked through her dress, into his shirt, onto the ground below her. She shuddered in his arms, gulping for breath even though her brain had already began to register that breath was no longer needed. Cloud watched her eyes fall closed, felt her go limp in his arms.
His eyes burned, his lips were dry and his fingers were shaking as he held her body. She couldn't be dead. She just couldn't be. He didn't even want to think about the journey without Aeris. He couldn't imagine it at all. He didn't want to.
Yet, here he was, watching her sink to the bottom of the lake, the blood from her wound mixing with the clear waters. Soon she disappeared into the depths but he remained staring. He heard someone call him from the shores and slowly made his way back, his eyes never leaving the spot where he had laid the flower girl to rest.
They were all haunted of images that night, unable to sleep without seeing the blood, the look of pain and surprise on the Cetra's face. And as Vincent sat by the fire, he was sure she saw the blood-soaked pink ribbon clasped tightly in Cloud's hand.
