He's successful, the CEO of GolDen Industries Private Limited, he's handsome, chiseled face drawing girls into a swoon and males into envy, he's young, his future is before him, he's rich, a fucking billionaire for god's sake, and he's got everything and more anyone could ever ask for.

He's also a lonely man.

He's alone on his pedestal, with no friends and a brother long dead, caught in a crossfire in the underworld of business politics. He's always blamed himself for Luffy's death, because it's his fault. All his fault. He should never struck that deal for that mining company when he knew that there would have been fierce competition, competition which could and would resort to any means to edge out their rivals.

Admirals Incorporated had assassinated his Luffy, and even without proof, he knew it was them. How ironic it was that those who advertised themselves as champions of the unfortunate and upholders of justice would resort to such underhanded methods. Sweet, beautiful, adorable Luffy dead because of him.

Portgas D. Ace has lost all will to live, because he has nothing to live for. Maybe once, but not anymore.

So when he turns and sees Akainu of Admirals Incorporated looming over him, pistol cocked and aimed at his heart, he knows it's the end. And he can't care less.

When the bullet tears through him, bringing pain, so much pain, he sees something which flickers and fades. Clinically, he observes that it isn't that uncommon to hallucinate while in extreme pain, and while pain is all that he feels, it isn't enough. Is the raw burning of nerves all this body can give him? Is this all the raw punishment this body is capable of doling out? And he's angry, because although his death would shake the business world to his core, the centre of all attention for a week or more, there's no one left to cry over him, to cry over who he really is, and he's alone to the fucking last moment of his life.

He wants to laugh but all that comes out is a dying gurgle and suddenly he sees

He sees.

Luffy running with him and all his friends- Jimbei of Fishman Transportation, Ivankov of Revolutionaries Private Limited, and so many others. Akainu is suddenly bearing down on Luffy and no I can't lose you again and he

moves.

He never knew he could be so fast, but suddenly the pain in his chest increases a hundredfold and he looks down to see hot, molten magma in a shape of a fist pouring through the hole in his chest and he's burning.

He see's Luffy's face, horrified and disbelieving.

Thank you for loving me!

And then, as the darkness wraps its empty fingers around his consciousness, he thinks he hears Luffy scream.

I'm sorry.
