Broken

It was too late. Just a little too late.

The all great and powerful, not to mention, very successful, Kyouya Ootori was on his knees, crying in the deafening silence.

His best friend and the love of his life had just gotten married a few hours ago.

Oh, how happy they both seemed. But why was it, when he saw those priceless smiles plastered on their faces, he felt guilt, regret and melancholy?

Why? He asked himself. Why did he have to let her go? Why didn't he fight for what he believed in? Why didn't he stop her from leaving?

The answer… lay deep within him. He knew that.

This girl had taught him that at times, he couldn't be too strong, serious and tough. He needed to learn how to remove the mask he hid beneath and open himself up to the joys and sadness of being loved.

She made him remember that he had a heart. And like all hearts, he learned, it could be broken. Unlucky him. He discovered it the hard way.

It was his fault, he blamed himself. If only he had realized his feelings sooner. He could've saved his heart from breaking.

Still, he loved her. And nothing would ever change that.

If that idiot friend of his would do something that would hurt her, he would be her knight in shining armor to protect her. If that guy would leave her all alone, this knight would accompany her. And worse, if Tamaki stopped loving her…

He was aware that wouldn't happen. In fact, it never would.

That guy, Tamaki, was too perfect. He would have to admit that the blonde would treat her better than any man would do, even himself.

Haruhi deserved Tamaki - no one less.

And the sad truth was… Tamaki deserved her too.

Kyouya removed his tear-stained glasses and started to wipe it. He started dabbing his face with a clean, white handkerchief, removing any traces of what had just happened.

If there was anything that he learned – that was not academic or business related – in the past few years he'd spent with the host club, it was that life wasn't perfect.

No lives will be lived without suffering and sadness.

No success will be met without failure.

Not all dreams will come true.

And not all love… will be returned.
