Homogeneous
A Skins Oneshot
Centered around Katie and Emily Fitch

Twins. Equals. Duplicates. Doubles.

On the outside, they look almost identical. But you notice the way one of them stands slightly behind the other, as if afraid of being in the spotlight. You notice the way the other juts out her hip and looks at everyone else, as if unimpressed with everyone and everything she's seeing. The one in front starts to walk and the one behind her follows automatically. She keeps a small distance behind her twin as they move, and the primary twin looks satisfied yet also annoyed by the other's attention.

Katie Fitch is the butterfly. She is mischievous and clever and poised. Her hair falls in long waves of fire and her eyes twinkle mahogany stars. She is beautiful, and she knows it.

Emily Fitch is in her cocoon. She is delicate and considerate and sweet. She combs her straight scarlet hair, not a knot in sight, and clips her fringe up with a little bow. She shares her sister's eyes, but in a deeper, darker shade. She is mysterious, and she doesn't know what to do about it.

Katie is popular. You know who she is and you say you love her, even if you don't. She's enchanting and exhilarating and knows how to get what she wants. You are drawn to her, like everybody else in the room. She's like the last smoldering cinder in a pile of burnt out ashes. She glows.

Emily is shy. You see her there: gorgeous, small, in pleated skirts and heeled Mary-Janes. She's intriguing in her obscureness. You look away as she bites her lip nervously. Her eyes have a film over them, as if hiding away a collection of secrets. She flickers.

Katie is dominant, but not completely assured.

Emily is subservient, but not completely docile.

Their insecurities are invisible to the world.

But they can't hide their insecurities from themselves.

While she flirts and flutters around, Katie covers up her fragility. Her mind is always tense, always eager to please. She is scared of being alone. She can't imagine a life with no-one there for her, no-one there to admire her, no-one there to listen to her thoughts. When she feels lonely, she is erratic. She cries herself to sleep then wakes up neutral the next day. She needs someone to desire her, to devote themselves to her.

Though Emily looks like she's fine with hiding in the corner, she loathes it. She longs to break free of her cage and express what she wants to. Her feelings are unresolved and her heart thuds with disarranged understanding. She aches to let the world know what she's really about but at the same time is too afraid. She is overwhelmed with longing to show emotion. She needs someone who won't judge her, someone who will be sensitive to what she has to say.

Katie will smile for the camera.

Emily will smile for the camera.

You will look at each of them in the picture and it will be like looking at the same face, with the same smiles which don't light up the brokenness in each pair of alluring brown eyes.

You can tell that they both need something more.

Katie needs to be able to shine. She needs to be able to stand up and walk around and be loved by everyone she passes. Adoration is the air she breathes.

Emily needs to step out of her shell. She needs to strive for her individuality and when she finds it, needs to be able to establish it into the world in order to truly overcome her emptiness. Distinctiveness is what she craves.

And although these two pine for such seemingly different things, once they look in the mirror and see their own faces staring back at them, side by side, they'll realize that their deprivation is exactly the same.

They are, and always will be, homogeneous.

And that is the reason they are so damaged.
