Chapter 1 – An Unexpected Reunion
"Full name?" the recruiter asked, holding his clipboard ready.
"Mathon Ymis," the tall, dark man replied—a strange contrast to most of the Emuli, who were usually short of stature.
"Age?"
"Twenty-five."
"Very well. Take the door to my left, then three doors down on the right."
"Yessir."
Maybe they'll finally let me join now, Mathon mused to himself, walking down the hallway. It's been a few years since the last time I tried.
Not sure what to expect, he knocked on the door.
"Come in." a stern voice replied.
I know that voice…the thought came unbidden to his mind. But why can't I place it?
Opening the door, he was treated to a shock. Standing in the middle of the room, physical examination equipment surrounding him, was Yordan Ymis—his older brother, who had just disappeared into the night ten years ago.
"Yordan?!"
"Mathon?!"
They rushed towards each other, and Yordan embraced Mathon in a giant bear hug.
"Where have you been?" Mathon asked.
"Oh, here and there. But that can wait. Since when do you want to join the army?" Yordan countered as they stepped apart.
"For a few years now. I tried when I was twenty, but for some crazy reason they wouldn't let me join."
"You mean the fact that you hadn't lifted a muscle to do anything even remotely related to work for ages?"
"Maybe. But enough about me," Mathon began with a grin. "You look…different. Maybe it's just the view from above, though I think I see Grandmother's Veden heritage showing up in your hair."
"What?! No way!" Yordan said in outrage. "Can you imagine how much I would get laughed at with RED hair?!"
"I was just teasing—I think. Though I was worried you might be getting all serious on me."
"It's called growing up, baby brother. You might just do it someday."
"Doubt it. But then, who knows? You might actually be able to instill some discipline and—god forbid—work ethic in me."
"Jezrien above, we can but try. But what—"
A large man opened the door and glared at Yordan.
"Shouldn't you be done with that recruit by now, Corporal?" he grated through his teeth.
"Yes sir sorry sir!" Yordan said, snapping to attention. "We were just about to finish up, Sergeant."
"Make it snappy," the Sergeant growled, turning to leave.
The moment he door shut, Yordan relaxed, rolling his eyes at Mathon.
"Isn't he just great? That's Sergeant Skel. I'll try to get you stationed far away from him—I do have a bit of influence that I've accumulated over the years. We probably should do the physical though…"
Alright, hope you enjoyed chapter 1. This is my first FanFic in a while, so it'll probably not be the greatest. I'll keep working on improving my writing style, and thanks for reading!
I will read all reviews, and do my best to reply to ones that seem like it would be good to reply to.
Bai!
