A True Victory

On a more serious note, here is a short one-shot about Albus Severus Potter, one of my favourite characters from HP. It was written for the Hogwarts Online forum prompt of the day challenge. The prompt was "victory."

Hope you like it! Happy reading...

Albus sat at the base of monument that had been erected over twenty years before to mark the deaths of all who had fought and lost their lives in the battle of Hogwarts. The cost of freedom had been their lives. The white marble was as grand and beautiful as the day it had been built. The way it loomed, its elegance commanding complete attention, reminded Albus of his father. Albus sighed. The monument stood for everything Harry was. Everything I am not, thought Albus. He had come searching for peace, but the statue only seemed to mock him.

Today was May 2nd, the anniversary of his father's defeat of Lord Voldemort. The anniversary of the passing of every name carved onto the monument's smooth marble surface. Albus read the names for what seemed to be the millionth time.

Albus knew his father was a hero. Harry had fought for the good of mankind. He was a true Gryffindor.

I am not, thought Albus, cradling his head in his hands, ashamed. I am a coward.

Albus sat in the shadow of his father's great bravery and prepared to do something he knew was as more cowardly than anything he had ever done before. He watched sunrise as the sky turned from red to blue and the birds began to sing. Albus didn't feel much like listening.

Time passed and Albus lost track of the hour. Soon, he heard footsteps and rose to meet the newcomer. It was Scorpius.

"I got your note," Scorpius declared.

"I'm glad you came," Albus said, standing up to greet his friend.

Scorpius sighed, "Of course I did, Albus. You know I would do anything for you."

"I know," replied Albus grimacing.

"So?" Scorpius prompted.

Albus took a deep breath. "I think that we should just forget what happened-"

Scorpius interrupted him. "Albus. I kissed you! I poured my soul out to you, and you ran away. That hurt."

"I know, Scorp, but—"

"No, Albus! You're afraid! That's what it is! You're afraid of being with me! You don't want anyone to know. You're ashamed."

"That's not it, Scorp!" Albus pleaded meekly.

But Albus was afraid. Afraid of how his parents would react, afraid of what would happen if people knew, not only that he was gay, but also that he was dating a Malfoy. Albus hated himself for his cowardice. I wish I could be brave like Dad, he thought.

"I know you Albus, and you're a terrible liar," Scorpius stated. "Tell me you really don't want this, and I'll leave you alone," he cupped Albus' face in his palm. "Don't think about them… do what you want."

"I—I…"Albus' voice faltered. He shut his eyes tightly and called upon his Gryffindor courage and his father's bravery. There had to have been a reason for his placement in Gryffindor. Please, he prayed. Please…

Scorpius looked at him, his grey eyes swirling with hope and love. Maybe… Just maybe…

"I want this," Albus whispered.

Scorpius' eyes shone as he leaned closer to Albus, and kissed him. The kiss was slow and sweet, but never had a kiss so obviously proclaimed victory. When they broke apart, Albus found himself smiling and unable to stop. It was the beginning of something, and both boys were excited to find out what that something was.

"I love you," whispered Scorpius.

"I love you too," Albus whispered back.

And in that moment, for the first time in his life, Albus felt brave.

So there you go. It's pretty different from my usual stuff, but I kind of like how it turned out. Please leave a review! I would love to hear your opinion.

Thanks for reading,
