Memories Kept

Maureen made her way onto the subway and sat in the closest seat to the door, she wanted nothing more then to make it to the hospital and jump straight out of the subway car. Leaning against the glass window Maureen shut her eyes and allowed herself to feel calm for at least a second or two. She'll be fine. She has to be. She thought to herself, still trying to convince herself Mimi wasn't headed in the direction she knew she was. No she won't. She's dying. The other voice in her head reminded her.

Opening her eyes back up Maureen took the purse that was on her shoulder and opened it. She pulled out her mini pink book and opened it. Inside were random pictures of both her and Mimi and some with part of and the whole gang. Smiling gently Maureen sifted through the pictures taking them all in. In one Maureen and Mimi were sitting on the steps outside the loft holding cans of Coke in their hands. Their faces were staring straight at the camera and they were both smiling wide.

Before she allowed the tears to jump to her eyes Maureen shut the book back up and she found herself staring at the pink cover. Lightly rubbing her fore finger over the pink, glossy cover Maureen rememered the day she picked it out in the store.

She was out in the cheap side of New York, trying to find something that she could record the last memories of her and Mimi with. She needed something like Mark had, something that would grab the last moments she had with Mimi and keep them close to her. She needed that more then anything. Walking down the aisle of a store Maureen paused at the school section, she hand no idea why, but she found herself stopped there and she couldn't peel her feel away from the spot.

She took her gaze from one spot of the school supplies to the next and before she knew what was really happening her eyes landed on the semi-mini pink notebook. Reaching out, Maureen grabbed it off the shelf and held it in her hands. It was perfect, at first she didn't know how it was perfect but it was.

She bought it and took it back to the loft and tossed it at Mimi. Mimi smiled at Maureen and took the notebook in her hands. "It's perfect." Mimi stated and Maureen threw her a quizzical look. Mimi didn't know why Maureen went out that day.

"For what?" She asked her friend as she sat next to her on the couch.

"Recording our last moments together." Mimi replied pensively and Maureen shrugged her shoulders at Mimi.

"Who said we were doing that?" Maureen asked her and it was Mimi's turn to shrug her shoulders.

"I could tell by the way you'd been acting lately." Mimi answered and Maureen nodded her head.

Bringing herself back to reality Maureen shook her head. Mimi helped her form the memory book for Maureen. After they had that conversation Maureen went back to her own apartment and she sifted through the box of pictures she had and threw it together. The next time she talked to Mimi it was went she collapsed and was taken to the hospital.

It'd been weeks since then and Mimi was growing weaker every day. Maureen only really left the hospital to get some air from the thick feel of her friend's death. It was more then she could bare, but Maureen always came back. Feeling the subway skid to a stop Maureen bounced up out of her chair and waited impaitently for the door to open. And as soon as it did Maureen ran out of the subway car and up into New York, where she got to the hospital as fast as she could.
