Iniquitous
If she squinted, this would be feasible. Kairi/Sora and Sora/Riku
* * *
Kairi's lips are warm like the sun and soft like the sand. Sora freezes because he isn't thinking anymore. There is no thought process going on inside his head. It's all frozen over, a barren tundra.
Kairi nips playfully at his lips. There are no silent questions; only a demand, wake up silly and kiss me back, I'm waiting. A harsh breath of hot air hits her cheek, Sora's breathing again. Cogs turn and slowly thought is being processed. Sora moves his mouth, he's not forming kisses but he's not forming words either. Kairi thinks that might be a good sign.
Kairi has always known that Sora and Riku were best friends and she was just their friend. Sure, everyone referred to the three of them, but really, it was only Sora and Riku.
Kairi was never selfish either, she never asked for more of Sora's time than she was given (and she never thought to ask Riku, honestly). But now, Kairi felt that sickening sense of happiness at a bad deed. She didn't love Sora. Sure, she loved him like a brother, but she didn't love him. Maybe if she squinted this would be feasible.
It was the sense that now Sora was hers, and not Riku's.
Kairi smiles a bit and bites Sora's lip. It wasn't possessive, really.
Sora's mouth is still forming odd shapes and visions. He doesn't see, his eyes are still frozen but he's alive and breathing.
Kairi finally pulls back (it's too awkward now) and looks off at the horizon. The sun is going down and they're sitting on the pier and damn if that isn't the best sunset Kairi has ever seen. It's perfect but, Sora isn't staring at the sun, or her for that matter. Sure, he's looking in her general direction, but he's not even looking in this world anymore.
Shyly, but secretly quite slyly, Kairi touches the top of Sora's hand. It does the trick. Sora's eyes flicker over to her. She smiles even though there was no magical spark of love in the contact. Kairi knows why, she's always known. Sora half smiles at her and moves his hand.
His lips are red and he doesn't break eye contact.
Kairi tilts her head, "Sora?" she asks faintly. "What's wrong, love?"
Sora doesn't speak because he doesn't know yet.
Kairi smiles sharply and shifts. She scoots closer and brings her delicate hand up to Sora hair. She grips it firmly and kisses Sora again, swallowing his gasp. There is still no magic or spark, only rawness, only humanity. Sora doesn't understand, but Kairi does. Kairi has always known.
She bites hard and Sora sounds like he's crying but that doesn't matter. Pain is necessary to erase happiness.
Sora whimpers and Kairi thinks of a kicked dog. It put a damper on the mood that never existed. Sora's mouth is still.
Kairi carries on her charade for a moment longer then, she sighs and everything breaks down inside.
Sora puts his arm around her small shaking shoulders. "It's okay," he whispers.
She has hope for just a moment, then, she sees his eyes.
Just their friend
She sobs.
Sora holds her tight and rocks with her peacefully, silently. The sun is long gone now. Kairi barely hears Sora murmuring apologies to her. They are meaningless, really. "It's not you," he says over and over, but Kairi knows that. She knows it.
She's always known that it wasn't her.
Just their friend
It was always Riku.
