Chapter 1:
New Beginnings
Berry yawned and stretched her legs, next to her she felt the bodies of her siblings, Flower and Mushroom. She gingerly stepped away from them and turned to see where they were. Ahead of her was a sprawling landscape of plains and forest, she shivered excitedly and lifted her nose to the air, searching for a trace of food. She caught the scent of an injured elk, all by itself not far from where she was. With one final look at her two remaining sisters, she made her way towards the elk.
Berry pressed herself to the ground, allowing her ears and tail to lie flat. Slowly she moved paw after paw towards the elk, soon it became a rhythm. The elk lifted its head and stared at her, before tensing its muscles to run. "Stupid elk..." Berry mumbled and raced after the fleeing cow. Finally she leapt up and bit its ankle, it let out a chirp of pain before spinning around, catching her off guard. She growled and regained her balance, before spinning around and lunging at the elk. She felt the hooves of the cow hit her a split-second before her teeth met with its throat, causing her to fall down again after only puncturing the skin. She yelped and attacked its flank, not letting go even as it spun her around. Suddenly it collapsed and she tumbled down, blood covering her shoulder. Berry lay there for awhile to catch her breath, then got up and dug into the carcass, ripping into her meal like a hoard of coyotes.
Berry licked her chops as she finished another hunt, she had chased this elk far away from its original herd and was now very close to stranger wolf territory. She ripped off one last mouthful of food before padding in the direction of the pack. She was a bit sceptical about blindly walking into enemy territory, but her mother told her that she must do so to get a mate. She stopped at the border and took a deep breath, then padded over the markers. Berry braced herself for a fight, but heard only the chatter of birds, no wolves, nothing.
