It is hard to fall in love, especially if it is with the same gender in a time and place where it is forbidden.

It had all begun the day that he met him. If he hadn't of opened that tomato box in the woods then they would have never met. If they had never met then Italy would never have become his ally and friend.

That's what he wanted to say anyway. It was what he tried to tell himself every time Italy smiled at him and he got a strange feeling in his chest. But he couldn't. He didn't want to lie to himself. He could still put on a face though, and try to push him away.

But Italy could see right through it seems.

His barriers began to break, and he found himself blushing and smiling at the small things that Italy does. Italy was filling a void in him he didn't know he had. Germany began to feel like there was a chance for him to be truly happy.

Then Germany's leader started having people taken away.

Germany panicked. He began to try pushing Italy away with a new vigor, and when that failed he tried to make Italy stronger. If he were to be found out by his leader then he wanted Italy to be able to survive on his own. He knew Italy's behavior would be looked over as Italian behavior, but his own…

Germany knew he didn't have much time. The searches or those n hiding were getting worse. He prayed that Italy understood this was for his own protection.

Then the day came when soldiers came to his home. He didn't fight when they took him away, stripped him of his uniform, and threw him on a train. He didn't try to ask where they taking him or what they were going to do to him. He already knew.

He was going to one of the camps.

On the train he chose to spend most of his time standing so that the others got as much rest as they could. He needed to pray and think.

He knew Japan would be fine without him, but would Italy? He had always needed Germany's help. But with him gone would he and his brother survive the war?

He prayed that his brother would protect them. He didn't care how much Romano hated him. He knew he was Italy's brother and that was enough. He didn't want Italy to lose his brother like he almost had.

When the train arrived Germany knew it was time for his final prayer.

He prayed that he would be able to see Italy's smile again one day.
