She Came to Me
I never asked for her love, nor for her tenderness
Never did I beg for her heart, nor sought a kiss.
My only crime is loving her so big and so strong
That everything I wrote turned into a song.
She came to me of her own free will
Despite all that I'd done, ignoring my downfall;
Looked up at me with those warm brown eyes
And begged us to live together for our entire lives.
I tried my best to warn her of the dangers ahead
That they would not rest until I was found dead.
She just smiled and sighed with genuine content
And stated, "I fear nothing, except your torment."
I sought to dissuade her to abandon this plot,
To beseech her to remember, lest she forgot
That, despite my undying love for her,
I couldn't bear to see her beautiful life end in a blur.
Once again, she just chuckled and smiled slightly
Softly stating, "No matter what you say, I'll be here constantly.
Life is too short to always second-guess yourself
And I intend to love and honor you—and all else."
I gave up persuading her to listen to my fears
For I could tell that they were falling upon deaf ears.
I could not help but utter a quiet moan
As I realized how my qualms had left me prone.
It seemed so ludicrous, so utterly absurd
That I was so afraid of what had occurred;
In truth, I was not frightened of what was to come
But was really giving her a way out, to be free of this scum.
But no matter what I said, she gently turned it away
In the end, I had no other choice but to obey.
And, as I kissed her, I secretly accepted
That, through her, I was a free man, my fears abated.
She came to me of her own free will
Despite all that I'd done, ignoring my downfall,
Looked up at me with those warm brown eyes
And begged us to live together for our entire lives.
