With a deep breath she took in the beauty of the sea. The shimmering waters and the rocky cliffs that surrounded them created a scenery so marvellous that none could stop themselves staring. The wind whipped around her, but the cold did not seem to be bothering her as she stood, her eyes focused on the horizon. They were red rimmed and her cheeks were still damp as she looked out over the water. Behind her a small boy played, his cheerful yells echoed off the cliff and out across the ocean.
"Garrickā¦" she said softly, turning to look at her son. He looked up from the flower he was holding in his small hands. She kneeled down; waving her hand, motioning for him to come over. "Baby, look," she said, pointing to the rolling waves and rocky shores. The boy frowned as he did.
"At what, mama?" he asked, his eyes so innocent.
"The waves, the sun, and the grass. Just over there," she said, pointing to a small bench that was positioned looking out over the ocean, "that's where your daddy brought me when he asked me to be his wife." Garrick's eyes widened as he smiled.
"Really?"
"Yes, my love," she nodded. Her eyes filled with tears again as she held her son.
"When's he coming back?" She looked at him, her eyes widening. A soft sad smile spread across her thin lips.
"He's not, bubba," she whispered, looking into his eyes, which were so much like her late husbands'. "He can't come back."
"Why not?" Garrick asked, confused.
"He's gone to a place we won't follow for a long time. Heaven." The boy looked shocked, hoping that his mother was tricking him. As time ticked passed and she still did not speak, he began to realise that maybe she was telling the truth. Tears filled the child's eyes it sunk in.
"It's okay, love, I'm still here," she said as she held him in her arms and looked back out over the ocean.
As she walked away, with her son curled in her arms, her heart suddenly felt lighter. She knew that her husband would have wanted to be buried here, and letting his spirit free here just felt right. She looked down at her sons' sleeping face and whispered:
"Goodbye, Gervaise, my love. I will meet you in the next life."
