There was a time when neither Eddy nor Sarah could ever even begin to imagine sitting on a bench together. Even more outlandish was the idea of purposely going out to see Peach Creek's Christmas tree lighting ceremony together. But, there they were, sitting on a gray bench with chipped paint, sipping cocoa and sharing the occasional word.

"It's good hot chocolate," Sarah said quickly, unsure of herself.

"Yeah, it is," Eddy replied.

Eddy still wasn't quite certain as to why he'd invited Sarah out with him. For a long time, she'd had an unwavering crush on Double D, but her affections shifted to another boy her own age. Unfortunately, that boy broke her heart.

Eddy had been looking for Ed, but he melted at the sight of Sarah's tear-stained face when she answered the door. Next thing he knew, he was taking her hand and offering her words of comfort. She didn't protest him touching her, instead, she silently plucked her coat off of its hook and followed him out into the snow.

In truth, and Eddy would never admit this, he'd had a thing for Sarah for a long time. He liked her spunk and her lack of fear for what others thought. He liked Nazz for her beauty and kindness, but she didn't have nearly the confidence of Sarah. He took another deep breath, the cold burning his throat, and he coughed. Sarah looked at him in concern, but offered him a small smile, nudging his drink up to his lips so he'd take a sip.

"Silly," she said.

Eddy smiled at her, getting a glimpse of her eyes. He hadn't been able to look Sarah in the eye in years. Hers were brown, just like her brother, but they had a luster to them that thrilled Eddy. He envied it.

"Hey, Eddy?" Sarah asked. "Do you think it's wrong to ask somebody out just to make someone else jealous?"

"No," Eddy answered.

"Really? I was feeling pretty bad about it."

"Who were you trying to make jealous?" Eddy asked, a wave of hope washing over him.

"That doesn't matter anymore," she dodged. "I like it out here with you."

She rested her head on Eddy's shoulder and he wondered if she was beginning to share his feelings. He slowly wrapped his cold-reddened fingers around her mitten-covered ones. She accepted his hand, looking at it in curiosity.

"Aren't your hands cold? You've got to wear gloves in the winter, silly."

"I'll be fine."

Sarah took both of Eddy's red hands in hers, gently rubbing feeling back into them. Eddy pushed the blush out of his face as best he could, but the redhead noticed and it earned him another smile from her. She put her head back on his shoulder, still running her tiny hands over his and he smiled along with her as the tree lit up.
