"You will never guess what I just saw!" Adam shouted.
"Nobody cares, you reject!" scowled Heather.
Artemis lifted up his head to see what all the commotion was. After he had been excluded from his first school St. Bartleby's for getting 'witty' to one of the teachers (he had only pointed out that the school's net system was way too easy for anyone to hack into), he now went to St Helens school for the gifted that was only three hours car journey away from Fowl Manor. Artemis sighed and put his head down to his chess game again. It was the 5th he had won in a row in the last 20 minutes. In fact, Artemis had never lost chess game in his life, even when he was only seven years old. He wondered why Adam was even in this school – he didn't have any intellectual intelligence whatsoever. He suspected his parents had bribed the school so their son didn't make them look bad.
"What's the matter" asked his professor glad that he had for once caught his young opponent thinking.
Artemis did two quick moves with his queen . "Check mate" he leaned back into his seat. Artemis was growing restless with the pitiful attempts of his teachers trying to outwit him. "My attention was elsewhere sir, that's all."
Ashamed his professor stood up and walked away defeated.
"ARTEMIS!!"
"What appears to be the problem, this time Adam?"
"Guess what I saw?"
Artemis remained silent.
"You won't believe me, but I'll tell you anyway" Adam babbled. Artemis still remained silent. "I was walking down the corridor minding my own business" Adam explained, Artemis raised his eyebrows "And I felt like someone was following me and I turned around...and there was no one there. But there was this weird shimmer in the room like compressed air"
Now he had Artemis's attention. For the last part of Adam's speech rang bells in his head.
"Did you see anything else?" Artemis asked.
"Well you won't really believe me nobody does everybody just thinks I'm demented"
Adam looked as if he was about to go off subject it was vital for Artemis to know what Adam was on about.
Artemis opened his mouth to mumble something close to comforting but decided against it – the last time he had done that, the person had ran away screaming, so he just got straight to the point.
"Well, was there anything else you saw?" Artemis asked again.
Adam was a bit taken aback that someone was listening to him "Well this is the weirdest part - it was probably my imagination but I could have sworn I saw a little person appear out of mid-air"
