My Hero

She stayed at his bedside for two weeks, leaving only to have a small bite to eat and to feed his cat. Everything else seemed irrelevant.

No one tried to move her, Ronnie checked up on Matt every day and made sure that Alesha had eaten. Jason and Henry didn't know either of them well enough to feel able to keep checking up on them but they made sure she knew they were there for her. After the second night even the doctors didn't try to make her leave, they found her sleeping in the waiting room after they kicked her out, instead they gave her a few pillows and a blanket and let her stay with Matt.

Two weeks later and Matt had yet to stir, the doctors had done everything they could and all that was left was for Matt to wake up on his own. Alesha could still feel the shock when she watched him get shot. She knew if he hadn't moved her out of the way, if he hadn't protected her, then he wouldn't be lying in this hospital bed - she would.

He was her Hero and always would be. So Alesha watched over him, waiting for him to wake up. She talked to him, told him what was going on in the news even though whenever she watched it he would be able to her every word. She told him how his cat was, telling him she was feeding him. And she told him how she felt about him, how much she admired him, her Hero.

It was 18 days after the shooting when Matt finally woke up. Alesha was asleep beside him, head resting on her arms on his bed.

His head hurt but he couldn't bear to wake her, sleeping so peacefully. When Alesha stirred and saw Matt awake she launched herself at him and wrapped him in a huge hug, only just remembering last minute to watch his injuries. Matt held her close as he felt her tremble. His head felt like it was stuffed with cotton wool and he couldn't understand most of what Alesha was saying. But one phrase stood out, and it drifted through his head as Alesha released him and he drifted back off to sleep.
