May I Have This Dance?

By Moony

I don't own JKR's charcters.

Lily sat in the chair, closing her eyes.

Maybe if I close my eyes, then I won't see an ugly guy come up to me to dance. Then I can pretend he's a handsome, charming man. Lily thought. She had come to the dance with no date, and it was humiliating. No one but ugly people with no dates had asked her to dance.

And then it happened. She heard footsteps, and she fought the temptation to open her eyes.

A sweet, charming voice said to her, "May I have this dance?"

She felt his hand, reaching for hers. She felt how warm, how soft, how delicate it was. And she trusted this stranger.

She took his hand and let him lead her somewhere. The music began to play a slow, romantic melody. Lily felt his warm arm around her waist, his soft hand in hers, his heavy breathing on her face.

"Trust me. Loosen up," the soft voice said. And Lily did trust him. She relaxed and fell into his arms. She let him steer. She let him twirl her as he wished, she let him take her wherever he was going.

She felt herself gliding, her robes swishing, she heard the slow music, and she felt the warmth in his arms.

Don't open your eyes. She thought. It was too good, it was too much of a dream. She didn't want to spoil it. Not yet.

"You look stunning," he whispered into her ear. So soft, so loving… She would need to see this man when the ball was over. Who cared how ugly he was? This man knew how to love, and that was all that mattered.

"Thank you," she replied softly.

His breathing feltlovely against her face. He steered her perfectly, gracefully. She felt like an angel gliding over the clouds, with the man of her dreams holding her safely. Nothing could happen in these arms. She was safe. Those strong arms keeping her away from the rest of the real world. Why hadn't this stranger shown his love to her before? He was so wonderful… why didn't he ask her to go with her beforehand? Had he been too shy?

The music slowed down and ended, but Lily still felt those arms around her. She still felt his soft, warm breath against her face. She wished it would stay like this forever. And then, she felt him lean closer.

And his lips met hers. Her lips tingled excitedly. His were so warm and loving, so tempting.A pleasant shiverwent down Lily's spine. Every part of her body vibrated, and shook. She was frozen, as time seemed to stop, and everything disappeared, the ball, the teachers, the students. All she knew, was that she was in the arms of the man of her dreams, and she wanted to stay like that for eternity.

She knew she must open her eyes. She knew she could not keep herself in this dream forever. And her delicate eyes fluttered open. Emerald green eyes locked into deep hazel ones.

"I love you, Evans," the soft, loving voice said.

And the warm arms slithered away, and the breathing stopped, and Lily was left with no one. The room whirled back, and she saw the students, the teachers, and the band.

Lily looked around for the man in the ball, but deep inside, she knew it could only be one person.

Her head turned, where James Potter was sitting with his friends. Their eyes met once more, and she smiled. Things did change.

"I love you too, Potter," she whispered.

Eck. I didn't like it at all. But whatever. Tell me what you think. -Monoy
