Chapter 1
The morning fog was settling over the spine as Roran woke Eragon up.
"Eragon, get up you lazy bum, or do you not want to get us dinner for the next couple days?"
Eragon sat up groggily and yawned, glaring at his cousin saying, "Roran, can't I have 5 more minutes of peace?" Roran chuckled to himself and threw Eragons bow at him.
"Let's go, before it gets too bright!"
Roran and Eragon entered the Spine with arrows notched into their bows, moving quietly enough, they could not hear each others footsteps. Roran looked at the ground beneath them and noticed tracks that still looked fresh, like a deer just went through there a few minutes before. Poking his cousin on the shoulder, they followed the tracks into the morning sun untill they came upon two deer standing and eating from the forrest floor.
Roran, thinking to himself, "Those two doesn't look like they could feed a family of two, much less us three for a week." Sighing, Roran and Eragon drew back their bows, both knowing to release at the same time, as they have practiced many times before. As they both released their arrows, a blinding light appeared and Roran and Eragon both fell to the ground by the force of the explosion that was coming from the light.
About 5 minutes later, after Roran and Eragon regained their senses, they both got up and warily walked over to where the ground was still smoldering, and discovered two pretty looking stones, deep blue for one of the stones, red and black for the other. Reaching out, Roran picked up the red stone, and Eragon picked up the blue one.
Roran turned to Eragon and said, "What are these things? What in the world make that noise and threw us back?"
"Roran, I wish I knew about both of those things. Anyways, what happened to the deer?"
Roran looked around and did not see any signs of any animal at all. Just behind the small crater, he saw two arrows sticking out of two different trees. "Look at that, we didn't even hit them!" Eragon saw the arrows and had a defeated look on his face. "Lets go Roran. After whatever the hell that was, I don't think we are going to see any deer today."
