Expectations Too High
Disclaimer: Set during that little mother/son chat in the Smallville episode 'Unsafe'. As while I love Martha and Jonathan, they put way too much pressure on Clark, not to mention had a lot of expectations on him while forgetting that even with his heritage and powers, he's just another kid. And then there's the fact his friendships and the like suffered horribly because of the fact they made him so mistrustful and scared of other people's reactions about his secrets. I don't think anything like this has been done before.
"You know… Its really funny sometimes..." Began Clark as his mom began to walk away after her last words to him.
His speaking causing her to stop and look back at her son, easily hearing the anger in his voice. "But with how heavily you and dad place your expectations on me its like you both practically forget I'm just another kid. Regardless of whether or not I'm an Alien with powers."
He hadn't even so much as turned around to look at her as he spoke. The anger and even resentment easily heard in his voice. "I have just as much of a right as any other kid to make mistakes sometimes. Even though what happened with Alicia doesn't feel the slightest bit like a mistake. You and dad want me to be happy and to one day find someone yet how can I when you both have made me so fearful of what other people may or may not do? My relationships with a lot of people the past few years has suffered horribly because of your expectations and fears and I'm tired of it." Continued on the weary young man.
The raw anger, bitterness, and sadness not being hidden at all as he finally unloaded from his chest. "Clark..."
"Is it any wonder that the Red Meteors have such an effect on me? As otherwise, I would just keep repressing and repressing and never just do anything about it cause its a 'bad idea'. When not doing anything is actually the bad idea as its unhealthy. I am just a kid and I shouldn't be having to make life and death decisions every day! Do you not realize how screwed up that is!?" Yelled out the teenager as he turned to look at her, tears coming down his angry red face.
Martha could only stare at her son, unable to say anything as he stared at her. Never having a clue this was how he truly felt and feeling horrible for how she and Jonathan had caused him so much pain without having meant to do so. For they had only wanted to protect their son from any kind of harm but as she began to realize, they themselves had been the ones to cause him the most harm. As the saying goes… The road to Hell is paved with good intentions...
She watched with wet eyes as her son stood up. "I'm done, mom. I'm not hiding anymore and I don't care if this upsets you and dad as I can't keep going on like this anymore. If no one wants anything to do with me after this, so be it. But… I'm done. I'm done with all these expectations." Declared the young man before speeding off as he was in no mood to hear what else his mom had to say.
Who couldn't even speak due to the impact of Clark's words as she began to cry.
Author's Notes: Some may agree with this, some may not and that's fine.
