In my opinion, Damon doesn't show his caring side enough, so I thought of this fic, where Stefan is bitten (while saving Damon), instead of Rose. How will Damon cope? This mini story will be a few chapters :)

Recap: Damon pisses off Jules. He also brings Elena back from trying to contact Elijah. Difference: Bonnie incapacitates Katherine and Jeremy manages to get out the tomb. Stefan isn't trapped :). Rose isn't in this story.

Chapter One (Stefan's POV):

Stefan sat across from his brother. "What are we going to do about Elena?"

"I don't know, Stefan. She's on a suicidal mission. Speaking of, what were you going to do if Jeremy didn't get out of the tomb in time?"

"Nothing."

"Oh really? That's not what Bonnie told me. She said you were ready to dive in to save him."

"Well, what if I was?"

"God, why has everyone got a death wish? You would have been stuck with Katherine!"

"Yeah I know, but - "

"Maybe that's what you wanted all along...old lovers reunited."

Stefan knew all too well this side of Damon. The annoyed, annoying side.

He got up in disgust. "Yeah well, what about you and Jules? She's a werewolf Damon, and it's a full moon. Are you stupid, or what?"

Damon stood up and moved slowly closer to him. "Don't call me - "

A crash in the distance interrupted him.

Both Stefan and Damon's ears pricked up.

"I'll go check it out. Stay here."

"I don't think so."

Damon rolled his eyes. "Whatever."

Stefan followed Damon down the corridor.

They were both looking at the smashed window when Stefan noticed a wolf appear behind Damon.

"Damon!"

Damon turned round, but it was going to be too late.

Stefan saw the wolf ready itself to pounce and he did the first thing that came into his head.

He shoved his brother out of the way, and in that instant felt a great weight fall on top of him.

He tried to get his hands under it to push it off, but his right arm got caught under one of its legs.

A sharp pain on his right shoulder stopped him in his tracks.

He stared at the wound, not registering that the wolf was actually off him, and Damon was standing above him with a sword in his hands.

He was looking out for the wolf, and hadn't noticed Stefan's wound yet.

"Damon..."

"Shh, you don't want to attract it back, do you?" Damon was still searching for any sign of the animal.

"Damon, I've been bitten."

"Don't worry Damon, see, there's nothing there, it's healed."

Damon was pacing up and down, and for some reason, avoided looking at Stefan.

"But what about Isobel's research? It said a bite could kill a vampire!"

"Well, obviously she was wrong. Do I look dead to you?"

"Haha very funny."

"It wasn't supposed to be a joke..."

Finally, Damon faced his brother.

"Stefan...what do you think you were doing? Why the hell would you jump in front of a werewolf?"

Stefan sighed. He knew this would come. "Because it would have attacked you."

"I would have gotten out of the way before that!"

"No, you wouldn't. Believe it or not Damon, you were just too slow."

"I don't know what I would have done..."

Stefan's head shot up. Wow, was Damon actually going to admit his feelings for his brother?

Damon saw the incredulous expression on Stefan's face, and seemed to shut down. "Never do that again."

Stefan sat at the Grill enjoying a night out with Elena. Since he had been bitten, he had been savouring every moment with his girlfriend.

He'd never really had the time to be scared of it because it had healed so quickly, but who knew when Elena would offer herself up for sacrifice to Elijah again?

If it wasn't him, it was her.

"Stefan, you haven't said a word all evening."

"Oh, sorry Elena, I was just…thinking."

"About what?"

"Never mind, I don't want to ruin our night, it can wait until tomorrow."

"Okay, if you're sure."

Elena smiled and reached for his hand across the table, but Stefan shook his head. Her expression turned serious until he beckoned for her to come closer.

She got up out of her chair and walked up to him.

"Elena…" he whispered.

She leant closer to hear him better, and that's when he grabbed her and pulled her to him.

She giggled with delight and they began to share an intimate kiss when a stab of pain erupted from where Elena's arm was draped across his shoulder.

Stefan winced and pulled back from the kiss.

Immediately, Elena let go of him. "What, Stefan? What's wrong?"

Stefan breathed in deeply and unbuttoned his shirt halfway, pulling it away from his shoulder.

"Ah…"

The wound had spread, now festering the whole right side of Stefan's back.

"Oh my god Stefan, what is that?"

"It's a werewolf bite, Elena." It felt weird, saying it out in the open. The reality of what it meant had not yet sunk in for him.

Elena's eyes widened with shock but Stefan continued before she could interrupt.

"I need to phone Damon."

Stefan dialled his brother's number, and waited a painstakingly long time for him to pick up.

"Hello Stefan."

"Damon. There's something you should see."

"What is it?"

"It's uh…it's the bite. It's worse."

A few seconds of absolute silence followed in which Stefan thought his brother had hung up.

"Damon?"

"Get back to the house. Now."
