Mariel and Dandin had lived at Redwall Abbey since Dibbunhood, and had always been the best of friends. But in all their years together, Mariel had never once removed the red ribbon she wore about her neck. Dandin thought this was odd, but whenever he asked her about it, Mariel's only response was that she would "tell him someday".
Time passed and the two young mice were married and lived in peace for many long seasons. But then Mariel fell ill.
