Caroline put on her best fake smile as she greeted her guests as they entered Ric's house. When she finally got a chance to disappear she headed right for the drink table and poured herself a glass of alcohol.

"Happy birthday, gorgeous."

Caroline turned to face Enzo. She was glad he was at least one person she didn't have to put a smile on for. "What'd you get me?" she asked with a smirk.

"You mean my presence isn't enough of a gift?" Her response was a glare. "Can I have a dance with the birthday girl?" He held out his hand.

"Why not." she took his hand and let him lead her an open space.

"Why don't you seem happy? I thought this was your scene."

"I have a scene?"

"You know what I mean."

"I don't really like celebrating my birthday. I am…" she looked around and went to a whisper, "dead after all, but Elena instead."

Enzo let out a small laugh. "You are still worth celebrating, Caroline."

"You know, he didn't even call. He was supposed to be my best friend and he couldn't even call on my birthday."

Enzo had to bite his tongue.

"Come on. Don't make that face. It's not like you can go beat him up."

"Seeing you this upset over him doesn't make me want to beat him up, it makes me want to stake him."

"Enzo." Caroline said in a disapproving tone.

"I'm serious. It's your birthday and you can't be happy because of a guy. Come on, you have me."

He was always trying to lighten the mood. "Who else could I possibly ever want?" she said joking.

"Turn around." he made a circle with his finger.

She looked at him questioningly, but did as he asked. Enzo pulled something out of his pocket and placed it around her neck. It was a dainty necklace with a simple charm hanging from it. She looked downed at it and turned to face him.

"It's beautiful. Thank you." she said with a real smile on her face.

"Now that is a Caroline face I've missed." he pulled her into a hug.
