Paul stares into the crib, his daughter stares back at him with eyes as big and brown as her mothers. She seems to say, 'you don't know what you're doing, do you?'
He runs his big hands through his thick dark hair, and sighs, "No kid, I really don't. Okay?"
This is the first time he's had time with his daughter. He and Bella just couldn't get it right, a one night stand, she could barely remember, and his memory was just as fuzzy on the details. She married her boyfriend, he had skin just as pale as hers and red hair. Boy were both of them shocked when 'their' baby was born with black hair, and a tell-tale tan.
Bella stayed away, the boyfriend turned husband filed for divorce, and she had no choice once the three months advance rent that her soon to be ex-husband left on the apartment ran out, but to go back to her dad.
Charlie took one look at his granddaughter and called up his best friend Billy Black to congratulate his son Jake, and tell him to man the fuck up, he had a daughter to support.
Jake demanded a paternity test, Charlie freaked, and almost shot him, all in all, it would have made a good episode of Maury, especially that moment when Maury would have said, 'Jacob, you are NOT the father.'
After that Bella had decided to start asking around, she called Angela Webber who told her that she remembered seeing her at Jessica's party with Mike Newton. Well obviously Mr. Blonde Hair Blue Eyes was off the hook, so Bella called him, and he told her that he left her off with Jess in the kitchen.
So she called Jessica, who told her that she left her taking shots with Lauren Mallory and Lauren's date who was, in her words, 'a totally hot Native American guy from La Push'.
Well Bella called Lauren, who called Paul, and that's how he found out he had a daughter. Mariana, originally Marie for Bella's grandmother, she agreed to change it to include his late mother's name, Ana.
Still caught up in the stare of his 4 month old daughter, he jumps at the laugh behind him. Turning, he sees Bella standing in the doorway. She smiles at him, and the sarcastic remark dies on his tongue as he's struck by her beauty, slightly thicker from the baby, he can't help but think it looks amazing on her.
She smiles up at him, "You really have no clue what you're doing, do you? I've been gone for an hour, and you're still in exactly the same spot."
She lifts the baby, handing her to Paul, "Here. Let her put her head on your shoulder, support her butt and back."
Paul inhales his daughters scent for the first time, cradling her gently against him, and for the first time in his life, he knows what it feels like to be totally, irrevocably, in love.
