Rain on the Window of My Soul
Disclaimer: I am not worthy! Baz is a god. (The song is mine, however.)
Author's Note: It's raining. I felt inspired. This fic was written. You reviewed (hint hint). There was much rejoicing. (yay) The end.

Satine stared out the window into the dreadful dreariness of a winter storm. Not that she didn't like rain, because she did. She loved to dance in the light cool rain of a summer sprinkle, or skip through a gusty spring rain. But winter storms were one thing she could not be happy about.
The cold fat drops seemed to cast a melancholy spell over the whole of the world, and nothing could lift the gray curtain. It fell the hardest on her heart. Yes, despite what the Diamond Dogs might think and say, Satine had a heart. And a soul, buried somewhere beneath her flaunted chest. Though it had been squeezed by her corset until half dead, her heart was still beating strongly and her soul was still longing... for love.
She stood and moved slowly towards the heart shaped window of the Elephant, singing to herself. "There's rain... on the window of my soul." She looked out over the whole of the Moulin Rouge. "There's rain on the window of my soul. But let the skies open wide and the heavens pour out. I'll still be here looking out... through my window, through my window."
Though the dream was faded, she could still remember a time when love was something she dreamed of. It was a fantasy world of flowers and hearts and singing birds. Now, there was no hope of love. She was a prostitute, with but one rule to follow- never fall in love.
"There was a time when my soul had wings. I dreamed of love and all those fanciful things. Who could have known, who could have guessed, what I'd be? I'd give anything so just once I could be free." She smiled to herself, closing her eyes and feeling the cold wind on her face. "Then I'd run to a boy with deep soft brown eyes and a debonair smile. Throw my arms round his neck and kiss his soft lips and he say those three words..."
A sigh escaped her lips as she realized her foolishness. "But there's rain on the window of my soul. Yes there's rain on the window of my soul! But if I could just see, someone who'd always love me, maybe I'd change my vulgar ways and fin'ly be free."
She ran up the stairs to the top of the elephant, letting the raindrops soak her hair and clothes. Raising her arms, she sang to the heavens. "Take this rain from the window of my soul. Take the clouds and skies of gray from my heart! And show me that boy who'll promise to stay... for more than a night." She sat down heavily on the edge of the bench. "With him, I'll face the rain every day. With him, blue skies will come from gray. But why can't I see, past the diamonds and gold? Past the rain on the window of my soul."
Satine wiped at her eyes, unsure of whether she was crying or if it was just the rain rolling down her cheeks. She shivered slightly, a small cough shaking her thin form. Below in the elephant, she could hear Marie calling her name.
Slowly, she descended the stairs, trying to stifle her cough. Marie gasped when she saw her, clucking her tongue as she moved to wrap a blanket around Satine's bare shoulders. "You should know better than to go out in the rain, child. You'll catch your death of cold." A cough slipped past her fingers. Marie took Satine by the shoulders and moved her towards the bed. "See now, you're getting sick. Get some rest. I'll come check on you later."
From the bed, Satine gazed out the window as the door shut behind Marie. She coughed again, but when her fingers came away from her mouth they were stained a deep red. A tear dropped to the pillow. "So I guess I'll never see past the rain on the window of my soul."
END.
