"Oh man, this is ridiculous," Danny Messer thumped the floor with his free hand. He pulled on his trapped arm, only to yelp in pain.
"Easy there, Messer," said Don Flack, his tones gentle and reassuring. "Keep on pulling like that and next thing youze know your arm will come off."
"Yeah, well it'd be better than being stuck here, argh!" Danny yelled in frustration. "Look, maybe if I just yank real hard on it, it'll come loose. One good pull and boom, I'm outta here."
"Or you end up dislocating your shoulder, maybe breaking a bone or two. And then youz'll still be stuck there, only hurting like hell until the fire crew arrive." Don looked at his watch. "Whenever that is."
"Don't let me keep you here or nothing," grumbled Danny. "Sure you got better things to do than sit around waiting for me to get rescued." He pushed his glasses up on his face and rubbed his eyes wearily.
"I told youze already, I'm not going anywhere."
"Yeah, whatever." Danny sighed heavily. "Neither am I." The cold floor beneath him was leeching the heat from his body and he shivered slightly, wondering just how much longer he was going to be trapped like this. It wasn't like he was in danger, well, apart from terminal boredom, but so long as he didn't try pulling away or nothing, he was just peachy. Then he felt movement behind him and he turned as best as he could just in time to see Don drape his suit jacket around him as best as he could.
"You looked cold," said Don, simply.
"But what about you?" asked Danny. "Won't you be cold?"
In answer, Don sat down behind Danny and wrapped his arms around him. "I got heat enough for both of us." He rested his chin on Danny's shoulder. "You just hang in there Danno. Fire crew will be here soon. They'll get you out and then I'm taking you home, you hear?"
"Yeah…I hear." Danny relaxed into Don's supportive embrace and sighed happily. If it weren't for his arm being trapped like it was, he wouldn't ever want to move.
There was silence for a few minutes before Danny spoke again, "You know this is all your fault anyway."
"My fault? How the heck is this my fault?" asked Don with some indignation.
"Well youze were the one who started kicking the machine when you couldn't get the candy bar out," grumbled Danny.
"Yeah, but it was your idea to stick your arm up to try and dislodge it." Flack looked up at the vending machine, which was looming malevolently over them.
"Yeah, but you should have stopped me!"
"You said you'd done it dozens of times before…oh wait, I know, that was when you were a kid."
"Well I didn't always have enough cash," said Danny, defensively.
Don hugged him a little tighter and dropped a kiss on the top of his head. "I know," he said gently.
"And I was only doin it cause I knew how much you wanted it, cause you know I'd do anything for youze. Don't matter whether it's a candy bar or tickets to a game. You want something, I'll do what it takes to get it for you."
"I know," said Don, resting his chin on Danny's shoulder. "But what I want…what I've always wanted…I got it right here in my arms."
They sat there in contented silence for a few minutes before something occurred to Don. "Danny," he said carefully. "You did try letting go of the candy bar when you were try to pull your arm out, right?"
The blush that covered the back of Danny's neck a few seconds later was all the answer Don needed.
