How Fitting

"I never stopped loving you." Naruto said softly, looking into Sasuke's coal black eyes. No matter how cold and impassive Sasuke's face remained Naruto could always see the true emotions that lay hidden in his eyes. Only he could pass through the walls Sasuke had erected to keep the world out, only he could see the real Sasuke, the one hidden from the world.

Too far. Too far.

Sasuke pulled out his sword, Naruto didn't flinch, didn't move, his gaze never flickered to the instrument of death held in his love's hands, he only looked at Sasuke's beautiful face. It was best this way, he wouldn't have to try anymore. He wouldn't have to half love Sai, Sai could find someone who would give him their entire heart, instead of shredded pieces that could never be fixed, that could never truly love back the way it had before. He no longer had to fake a smile for Sakura or pretend to be happy while he drown in his pain. And as Naruto looked in Sasuke's coal black eyes he saw what was hidden in those desperate eyes, the simple wish to take it all back and to just say those simple words.

Too late.

He fell to the cold ground, the twilight haze surrounding him, slowing his descent into darkness, the silver sword through his heart, how fitting.

How fitting, how fitting…

And as his world slowly dimmed he heard the words that cut deeper than the sword ever could, "I never said I loved you…" Naruto flinched, only to have the words redeemed by Sasuke's soft whisper in his ear, "never out loud." With that he faded away, just another ninja lost in the unforgiving world of their lives.

"Vedngence can only lead you so far." The memory of those words rang through his head. He knew he would walk away, never to come back, never to pause and look back. It was behind him now, all he had left to do was complete his avenger's goal. Yet…he looked at his sword, his burden of death, the weapon he had so expertly used with such twisted grace and perfection, the weapon that had turned him into a wielder of death. Now all he could see was the bloodstained sword that had pierced Naruto's heart…

"how fitting…" he whispered his voice breaking on tears that would forever remain unshed.

how fitting.
