Two Beats of a Weary Heart

A TVD Poem by PatchsFallenAngel

They lay grey, side by side

dressed in penguin suits she knows

they'd have despised.

Elena ached

for the forever she never wanted

'til now.

Her heart beat two tethered rhythms

two different beats: STE-FAN-DA-MON-STE-FAN-DA-MON...

STE-FAN, her once a upon a time.

DA-MON, her once in a lifetime.

STE-FAN, a kiss that warmed her

on the coldest of days.

DA-MON, a comet flashing by, burning the sky

like rubber.

Their deaths came as Autumn leaves fell.

Heartbreaking, inevitable, a hope

of something new.

Winter was cold and dark as the grave

those two beats echoing in her lonely chest.

Spring arrived, laying fresh flowers on tombstone,

bringing a young crow to the mausoleum door.

By Summer, grief melted from her drying eyes,

life shone through cracks in the trees.

The dull ache inside, like the bruise of an apple:

the sweetness of the fruit never changed

but the taste was never quite the same.
