"Sooooraaaa!"
The little redheaded girl came running over, laughing like mad in the way that little kids do. She was wearing a silly party hat, like most of the people there, except for maybe a few. The brunette she was calling out to was one of them; his other friend, a boy with silver hair, was the other.
"Sooora, I've got a surprise for you!" She giggled, then plopped one of the silver-and-pink shiny things on top of his head. "Here! Now you're oficially at my birthday! Now, you next, Riku!"
The silver-haired boy looked briefly panicked, but before he could do anything, she plopped one down and stuck the string under his chin. "There! Now you don't ook so gloomy~"
Riku sighed. Sora grinned. "Thanks, Kairi!"
She giggled again. "Come on, Sora, come on, play some games with me! I can't win anything…."
"Well, if you can't win, he won't," Riku teased with a small smile.
"H-hey! I'll totally win!" Sora said. "Let's go bobbing for apples, that'll show him, Kairi!"
"I'll play too! I'm better at that than you are, Sora!"
All three of them laughed, then ran over to where a tall man was standing next to a bucket filled to the brim with apples and water. Kairi and Sora bobbed and Riku tried, too, but nobody managed to get an apple.
"Hahah!" Sora pointed to Riku. "YOu can't do it neither!"
"You're not any better!"
"Guys….!"
"I'll do it! I'll get the biggest, brightest, juiciest apple ever! And then I'll get the prize!" Sora boasted, then dove back into the barrel.
It took several more tries, but he wouldn't give up. Finally…
"WOOOO!" he shouted, dropping the apple into his palm. "I did it! I got an apple! And I get to eat it, AND get a prize!"
"Great job, Sora!" the man said. "Here… Kairi's mother made these." He pulled out a small, hand-sewn doll, a boy with a plastic sword. There were also dolls of girls with small smiles and other cute things.
"Oh, wow! This is awesome!" Sora said, grinning like mad. "Kairi, Kairi, look what I got!"
She grinned. "That's awesome, Sora~ I always liked the Knight dolls the best~"
"Really…?" he asked with a smile. "W-well then… I'll give this to you, then!" he said, putting the doll in her hands. "He can be like me! Always ready to protect you, forever!"
Riku sullenly looked off to the side, crossing his arms.
"Sorry, I'll give you the next one, Riku!" Sora said.
"It's not like I want some dumb doll," he muttered. "Dolls are stupid."
Kairi grinned, then pulled both of them into a hug. "Awwww~ You're both the best, guys! I really, really, really like you! And I'll got Mama to make you both dolls, too! They'll be with you, forever and ever and ever~"
Both boys flushed, Sora grinning, Riku dissolving into embarrassment. The man watched with a knowing smile.
The silver-haired boy, no, a man now, sat quietly alone in a room spare of anything but a single bed, a desk, and bookshelves filled with tomes on darkness. He rolled over, closing his eyes, shutting out the memory.
"I'm too old to be playing with dolls," he growled to himself.
But he missed the little knight that was sitting on his desk at home… and the memory of the red-head girl who'd come running up to him with it one day, so long ago, apologizing for the fact he hadn't gotten one at her party.
Sora had won another one that night. And she'd still given him one anyway. She always did like Sora best.
But he was going to change that… He was going to save Kairi.
And he was far too old to play with dolls anymore…
