We are closer than lovers. What passion could compare to this?
A joining that existed from the beginning, the union of light and shadow.
One cannot exist without the other.
We are as different as night and day;
five thousand years from my birth to yours,
and yet across all that divides us
our hands, outstretched, still meet.
Within each other and ourselves we find our strength renewed.
Truly can it be said of us 'they are of one mind',
but never so deeply did two unite
yet retain their individual natures.
Our paths have led us long into danger,
mysteries yet unfathomed;
perhaps we may never know
what plan of fate has brought us to stand
in the halls of one another's thoughts,
not as intruders but as soul-mates.
The journey seems to have no end,
much like my ancient prison, one door opened
only reveals another and another,
and which conceals the truth of my past?
Yet I need not walk this labyrinth alone.
Tried in flame and darkness, forged together
beyond the power of this world or the next to break,
I have only to turn to find you there.
And so, tonight as you lie in dreams
I will whisper these words to myself,
the words you read me not so long ago.
I didn't understand them then, but now, I think...
I think perhaps I've come to know
exactly what you meant to say.
"You--you alone--will have the stars as no one else has them.
In one of the stars I shall be living.
In one of them I shall be laughing.
And so it will be as if all the stars were laughing,
when you look at the sky at night.
You--only you--will have stars that can laugh!"
(Author's note: the quote at the end comes from "The Little Prince",
written and illustrated by Antoine de Saint Exupéry. I strongly urge
you to read it, if you can find a copy at your local library or bookstore.)
