Fidelity
Disclaimer: Of course I don't own Gintama
Life was cruel. Hijikata knew that too well, brought up through the bitter thunder storm called life, yet when he saw the Amanto's sword go through Gintoki, he had never felt so cold. That idiot was too dumb to die, he would tell himself over and over again as he fought off his own enemies. As much as he hated to admit it, nothing mattered as he saw the stupid bastard go down, blood joining the red upon red that already existed on the battlefield. Hell, he didn't even feel a blade cut his leg, it didn't matter that he forgot how to run and breathe and live. Had breathing always been this hard? Tripping over his own feet he dodged narrowly dodged numerous blades before he stumbled down beside Gintoki, shivering in his own blood. Hijikata lifted Gintoki's head onto his lap, while his mouth ran incoherent and empty words of assurance.
"You're not going to die, bastard. I swear to God, Gintoki, you can't die on me." He rasped in panicked breaths.
"Calm down Hijikata, people would think you're the one who's dying." Gintoki laughed hollowly between shivers.
He felt Gintoki's coarse hand on his cheek and he had to shut up because God, his hands were so cold.
Tears were drowning out the battlefield. They were two sinners and victims of 'living' and fuck, Hijikata wasn't ready to let the sweets loving idiot go to hell.
"Don't die Gintoki," He pleaded into his silver hair, "It hurts too much without you"
"What's this, has the great demon vice commander gone gay?" He snorted as he brushed his fingers through Hijikata's blood matted hair.
"Shut it."
A painful pause lingered in the thick air before Gintoki started crying.
"You need to live on, Hijikata-kun, don't let my death get in the way of the things you must do for this broken world."
Even Hijikata was really crying now, he couldn't believe this day had finally come. The day when Gintoki would die and he would let his tears drain out had come too soon.
After several minutes of Hijikata whispering into his hair, Gintoki's tears stopped, his heavy breathing became softer and his eyes blinked slowly like he was trying to burn the memory of the damned world into his crumbling mind.
"Please take care of Kagura and Shinpachi for me Hijikata-kun." He said so agonizingly slowly and quietly.
"I will, so keep your eyes open, damnit." He screamed again and again but Gintoki was drowning. He was falling through his own mind, the world and life. Hijikata was screaming but the fingers in his hair had fallen to the cold hard ground. He cursed Heaven and Hell. Life was really a cruel game of the Gods, their lives mere pawns on the game board. It wasn't fair but he was helpless and useless with his lowly human body.
It fucking hurt.
