She had gone back home slightly earlier than she usually did a Friday night. Earlier, in this case, happened to be two in the morning, and she only fancied two things : sleeping, and being left alone, for good. The break up with Pete had gotten to her more than she had been wanted to show, and she really wasn't at her best when the bell rang, disturbing both her plans.
She opened the door to an uneasy-looking O'Neill, whose glance seemed to ask her why in hell he had, in all places, come here. Wanting anything but company, her voice was more rude that she had intended when she asked : "What do you want, Jack?"
She had let his first name slip, more than aware that neither his outfit nor attitude were official. It might actually have been the more messy she had ever seen him in.
"Can I come in?" he asked, sounding like he had remembered the reason for such a late visit. She shrugged, making a step back to allow him in. He took four steps, yet was still close when she closed the door, realizing, as he turned back that she was stuck between his deadly serious face and the door.
"What do you want?" she asked again, softly yet with a hint of tiredness. He looked at her for a minute as he matured his answer, then voiced out what had been been on his mind for so long. "You". She had tensed at the simple word and gulped nervously, trying to buy herself some time.
"You can't always get what you want" she stated, mentally slapping herself as she saw him briefly lose composure before his near indifferent mask came back. He nodded as she felt her mouth freeing itself from her brain again and adding a few more words, one she had been craving for for way too long.
"But sometimes you can get what you need" Her voice had been but a faint whisper, but the renewed glimmer in his eyes assured her he had heard. They both took a step toward each other, nothing but a few centimeters between them anymore. He was the first to react and bent down as she closed the gap between them, completing the move, finally achieving the kiss they had long craved for. Her hands came to his neck as his arms wrapped around her waist, neither of them wanting to let go. When they finally parted for air he whispered : "We'll find a way, Sam." finding her eyes with their matching flames of hope in future. "We will", she answered as she curled against him, keeping him as close as she wished to keep the promise.
