Chapter One
There was blood on his hands. The red sticky substance was warm to the touch.
Remus sat alone in the forest, naked and shivering. Last night he had transformed. He remembered the pain; the bones cracking, skin stretching, his body contorting. This was a regular occurrence. However –through his muddled thoughts- Remus realised that he wasn't in the Shrieking Shack.
Slowly standing and stretching, he checked his body for injuries. A few small scratches covered his torso; nothing warranting the amount of blood covering his arms. A small flashback came to mind –a rat, a dog and a stag. His friends! What had happened to his friends? What if…What if the blood belonged to one of them!
Remus became frantic. He screamed and yelled, frightening the wildlife away from the area. Pushing through the low hanging branches, he burst into a small clearing. Bathing under the light of the morning sun, were his friends. Peter, still in his animagus form, curled peacefully next to a sleeping James. Remus breathed a sigh of relief and leant against the rough texture of a tree.
Sirius (just awakened) sat next to him, a tired smile adorning his face.
"Padfoot, what happened last night?" Remus whispered.
"Things just got a little bit…" Sirius paused, "...hectic. Nothing we couldn't handle," he grinned.
"I didn't hurt anyone did I?" Remus shuddered.
Sirius awkwardly shuffled at the question.
"No, everyone's fine. Well, except for the deer…" Sirius trailed off, looking over to the far end of the clearing.
There in the shadows was a fully matured deer, its legs swept under its body. Remus winced as he saw the large rip down its middle, the blood seeping through the gashes. He turned away. The blood, now dry, still covered his hands. Daunting red against pale skin.
The burden of a predator.
