A super-short prelude to the fic; once the chapters start, the perspective will switch between Robin and my OC. In contrast to my Nightwing fic [which will be updated soon], this one is going to be taking place around the first season of Young Justice. Hope you enjoy!
Batman already swept the perimeter as he always did, but stayed perched atop a near building as he watched the woman at the docks. Her trench coat and blonde hair swayed in the wind. He could tell she was holding something, but he wasn't sure what it was. The area seemed safe enough, and he had kept her waiting for a while, so Batman decided to silently swoop down and approach the woman from behind.
"What is it, Harley?" his deep voice called out, startling her. "If this is another stunt I swear I -" She turned around to reveal to Batman what she was holding – a baby loosely swaddled in cloth, sound asleep. Batman's voice got caught in his throat as he glanced down at the baby. After a moment, his gaze returned to Harley Quinn, who solemnly looked up at him in return.
"I need a favour, B-man…," she said softly, stroking the baby's wisps of blonde hair. The baby made a cooing sound before its eyes slowly opened; the light blue irises glanced lovingly up at Harley. It let out a giggle before noticing Batman. Instead of crying, like Batman expected, the baby smiled and reached out for him. Harley Quinn smiled at the baby, moving her arms forward to invite Batman to take the baby from her arms. Cautiously, the Dark Knight accepted the baby and held it close. The baby rested its head against Batman's chest before closing its eyes once more.
"You know how a couple of months ago I helped you catch Mr. J on the condition no one would know it was me?" Harley asked, not removing the gaze from the baby. "Well, I didn't do that because I wanted my puddin' locked up. I did that because –"
"You were pregnant," Batman finished, piecing it together.
"Mr. J would've killed me if he found out!" she cried out, tears forming in her eyes. "He would've killed my little Sophia… The only true sign of my undying love for Mr. J…" She sighed to herself before glancing up at the intimidating hero. "B-man, you're the only person I could think of to ask… Please, take care of my little Sophia." Batman's realized this was where the conversation was headed, so he just continued to stare at the blonde woman in front of him. "Even if I can't take care of her…knowing she's alive and safe is fine with me. Even if you're the one taking care of her…" Her eyes focused on the baby girl in Batman's arms, tears continuing to swell up in her eyes. "…I know you don't like me, and I know you hate Mr. J but please… Sophia ain't done nothin'…"
Batman looked down at the sleeping girl in his arms and took a moment to think. He could tell Harley Quinn had no angle on this. She just wanted to protect her daughter.
"I don't know what's worse… Mr. J finding out we had a baby or Mr. J finding out I gave the baby to you, B-man…"
"I'll take good care of her. I give you my word."
