Watch the Sea

She sank into a cushion between two pillows, crossing her legs. Absently flipped through the soft pages of the book in her hands, feeling the edges drag across the pad of her thumb. Her blue eyes blankly scanned a paragraph chosen at random. What is it even about?
Sighing, she kept pretending to read. Flip to another page, stare at a paragraph for a minute, flip, stare, flip, stare. She doubted her mother would even notice her going back and forth between chapters, between the middle, end, and beginning. But she swore to herself to maintain this process as long as her mother was there.
She glanced at her mother seated at the table, alternating between clacking and tapping at keys on the laptop and sipping a cup of tea. Her mother always had a air of intelligent elegance with her smart haircut and focused, deep blue eyes. Even after a long day at the hospital.
A part of her always wished she was like her mother from a young age. Every time she visited the hospital where her mother worked, other doctors and nurses would tell her how lucky she was to have a mother like her. Always caring, dependable, kind and always knowing what to do.
She took a deep breath and tried to focus on the words in front of her. She didn't really want to read, especially about arithmetic theory. But she felt she had to. There was always a thought remaining at the back of her mind, a need to prove herself to her mother. To prove she wasn't a disappointment.
A deep rumble broke through her newfound focus. Her head quickly turned to the window next to her in response to the sudden noise. Lightning shot across the night sky, flashing for a brief second.
Absently closed her book, listening to the rain tapping the window. She stared at the city on the other side of the glass. Lights from skyscrapers and stoplights in the distance seemed like stars. Looking down, she saw clumps of umbrellas slowly moving along in a stream, briefly illuminated by passing headlights.
She turned her eyes to the dark horizon. She often imagined the sea churning just beyond that distant line. She remembered like she saw it yesterday. Her parents often took her to the beach for vacation when she was younger. She used to walk along the sand, collecting any seashell and rock she found in a small, blue bucket. Sometimes she would just stand still, watching the sea rock back and forth like a seesaw.
The last time she went to that beach house was right before the divorce. Echoes of her parents arguing came into her room as she looked out at the moonlight reflected on the waters. She had watched the waves sway in the silver light, trying not to think about anything.
A small smile crept across her face as she remembered.
"Well, I think it's time to turn in. Goodnight," her mother sighed as she stood from the table. She heard her mother's slippers lightly scrape across the floor.
"Goodnight."

I thought I'd try something new, something small. Plus, I'm a sucker for a rainy scene :P I've never
really written for Ami before, but I liked it. Maybe I'll try some more in the future.
Thanks for reading and I hoped you enjoyed!
