A/N: Yes, another Barefic xD. I'm totally addicted and not afraid to admit it. This is a late birthday present for my sister who wanted me to write a semi-fluffy Peter/Jason fic. Happy birthday :).
On that day in September, it was so unexpected. There you were kissing me, and time seemed to freeze.
From the Start
It started out very simply.
They were roommates. Of course they had to get along. Despite their differences- and the one similar feeling the two of them were experiencing but would rather not admit- they would have to learn to accept the other.
It really began one night in the first week of school while Jason was labouring over his history assignment. He let out a strangled yell of frustration that Peter, who had just entered the room, couldn't ignore.
"Do you need help?" Peter had asked his roommate.
Jason simply shook his head, still staring at the paper in front of him.
"All right," Peter said, moving to do his own work. "But I'm here if you need me."
The phrase became a depiction of their odd friendship. Any time one was feeling uncomfortable with the other, they'd simply offer to help. "I'm here if you need me."
The first girl who'd shown interest in Jason without him shooting her down was another one of these awkward moments. Jason was pacing back and forth, trying to figure out whether or not it was worth pursuing.
She doesn't deserve her. Of course he'll say no. They're all wrong for each other. These and other thoughts flitted around Peter's mind, but of course, the only question he phrased was, "Can I help you decide at all? Give another opinion, perhaps?"
Jason shook his head, but smiled weakly to acknowledge his gratitude at Peter's offer.
"I'm here if you need me, all right?"
He didn't end up going out with her.
It was late in the afternoon, almost October now, the leaves aflame with colour and vibrancy, stealing the excitement from the students, who travelled to and from their classes with little enthusiasm.
Jason had been staring at him all day, but for what reason, Peter could not seem to divine. As he grabbed a sweater to help shield against the growing chill in the room, he finally snapped. "What?"
"Nothing," Jason murmured, turning away. The silence reigned for a few more moments before the two of them lifted their eyes at the same moment, accidentally meeting one another's gaze.
Peter snapped his eyes away from his friend's, his cheeks burning with shame. If only he would stop staring.
"You said you'd be there," Jason finally murmured.
Peter frowned. "I'm here," he conceded, hoping to get some answers.
Jason's reply was nearly inaudible, and Peter was sure he was imagining it. "I need you."
Peter struggled to conceal the flash of hope that crossed his face. "Okay, how can I help?"
He was responded with a brushing of Jason's lips against his.
He didn't stop to question, to breathe, or to even think. He just responded, pouring out weeks of unsaid emotions.
They broke apart after far too long to be considered a joke, an experiment, or an accident; however, for Peter- and for Jason, if he was to go by the look on his face- it was far too short.
"Sorry," Jason muttered nervously, turning to run.
Peter stopped him by grabbing onto his hand. "Shut up," he said, pulling him back for another kiss.
