It's kind of strange to think I wrote this over a year ago.
Kano awoke from a dreamless sleep. It took a minute for his eyes adjust to the blackness, but it didn't take long for him to notice that Seto was absent from the bed that ran parallel to his own. Of course he was. Seto hardly ever slept in his own bed, and Kano liked being alone at night. It was more peaceful that way. Kano's eyes flicked over to the clock on the other side of the room, a faint 3:25 glowing a soft green. Kano pulled kicked the sheets off of his body in the hot air. Seto had closed the door behind him. People had always assumed that Kano had enjoyed having the door shut, but now it didn't seem necessary. He liked hearing Kido's soft muttering in the night and the amount of work that it took for Marry to get comfortable. Seto was quiet. Kano hated the quiet.
Kano sat up and shifted his body so he faced Seto's empty bed. His feet hit the concrete floor, which was surprisingly cold. Kano stood and shuffled to the door, opening it slowly so he wouldn't make any noise. He ran a hand through his hair as he stopped in the doorway to the girls' room. Kido slept closest to the door, and Kano could make out a faint outline of her body heaving up and down, whispering something about a forest. For a moment, he considered waking her up, just to see what it was about, but decided against it in fear of what she would do. Kano looked over to where Seto and Marry were had his face pressed into the back of Mary's head. How could he breathe with all of that hair? Mary had her mouth open slightly, and if Kano listened closely he could hear her soft breathing. Her knees were pulled up almost to her chin, making Seto dwarf her even more. God, he just can't stand to sleep alone, can he? Kano thought. Both of them looked happy together and Kano hoped it would last. It was nice to see that Seto had made more friends; all of them were getting to a nice place in their lives.
Kano sighed. It was hard to think about what would happen to them after this was all over. They would grow up sometime, wouldn't they? At least for now they were young. For now they could keep on pretending things were okay. He moved over to the bathroom, flicking the light on absentmindedly.
He stared at his reflection in the mirror and hated what he saw. He hated hat no matter what he did, no matter how he changed his appearance, he would always be pathetic and scared on the inside. Kano put his fingers up to the glass, scratching at the surface until the reflective film came up at the edge and fell into the sink. He twisted one of the knobs, and let the small coating swirl down the drain. He splashed some water on his face. There was a scuffling noise in the bedroom next door. Kido appeared in the bathroom doorway.
"Hey," Kano whispered "what are you doing up?"
"Nightmares," she replied.
"Oh. I was just going back to bed."
"Yeah, okay."
The two of them switched places as they had done hundreds of times before. He tried to catch a fleeting glimpse of the girl grabbing the edge of the counter and squeezing her eyes shut before he departed. Kano brushed a stray piece of his blond locks away from his face before going back to bed.
This was it, and Kano supposed this would keep happening. After all, they had fallen into their routines, and it would be strange if any one of them broke away from it.
