I'm Off

A young man came down from the mountain into a garden where a woman sat not looking his way. His medium length blonde hair swayed in the night wind which also made the case he carried knock against his knees. He sat down next to the woman who seemed in a daze of thought staring up to the sky.

"Mum." She jumped in surprise, turned towards the voice and smiled upon seeing who it was.

"Thete!" He hushed her and she dropped to a whisper. "Or do you prefer the Doctor now?"

"It donn'ut matter."

"Oh look at the state of you." She began fussing around with the wrinkled, once crisp, collar of his white button-down shirt.

"Mum!" He wriggled out of her doubting, in the scramble the chain around his neck was bared.

"Is that a TARDIS key?"

"Mum, I came to tell you something." He paused for a second preparing for the aftermath of what he was going to say. "I'm leaving, it's time I'm off." He sped up knowing she was going to interrupt. "I want adventures, to live my own life. And I'm not going to live it the way the old fools in charge say we should."

"I know it's a stupid question, but do you realize how many rules you'll be breaking?"

"Exactly two-hundred and twenty-seven." In his voice was a definite tone of pride.

"How did you get a TARDIS?" Her mind answered her question, and worry spread across her face and flooded her eyes. "You didn't, tell me you didn't."

"I'm just borrowing it. Anyway it's one of the old type-forty's nobody uses. It'll just get scrapped."

"Well, I know there's no point trying to discourage you once you've got your mind set on something. You know this will make you a renegade?"

"Yeah, I know."

"Just be careful, and don't do anything stupid."

"Yes, Mum." He took a deep breath letting it out in a long sigh, he glanced over towards the house where he'd lived until the age of eight. "Well, I guess I'm off."

"Hold on, I've got something for you." From the pocket of her coat she pulled a small leather journal. He took it placing it in the case beside him.

"I guess this is goodbye for now." He started to stand.

"Oh no you don't, come 'ere." He let her kiss him on the forehead and hug him tightly. She reluctantly released him tears glistening in the corners of her eyes. "Goodbye. Goodbye, my Doctor." He stood up and began walking away up the scarlet grassed mountain-side wiping the rolling tears from his cheeks. He opened the doors of the TARDIS and walked in, his face split into a wide grin of excitement. Off he went to begin his new life as a renegade timelord. Adventures awaited him out there somewhere.
